....today we took our Fall Foliage day trip. We decided at the last minute to go to Woodstock (the town), Saugerties and environs,
never having been there. I was determined to have my picture taken in front of Big Pink, for which I had obtained the address (2188 Stoll Road, W. Saugerties) but I was THWARTED. There's a cluster of five mailboxes, one of which is 2188, and there were five houses set WAYYYY back from the road at odd angles, deep in the woods, and none of 'em looked anything like the picture on the album cover. So obviously it's been remodeled at least once. Well, I wanted to SEE BIG PINK, and I assume I did in fact SEE IT--I just don't know which one it was.........
I did, however, have much better luck with the BOB DYLAN MOTORCYCLE CRASH SITE (Zena Rd., 1 mile South of Rt. 212, sharp curve by a red barn) which I found with no trouble. There's no marker--perhaps we should take up a collection to erect a Bloody Harmonica or something like that....anyway, I took a picture of the curve. What am I, an idiot??
Then we went through Woodstock Proper, drove back, parked in the middle of town and walked it. I don't know what it looked like thirty years ago, but it's pretty cool even now. Not as "yuppified" as I had expected, although it seems as though it's trending that way. Four restaurants, three bookstores, one record store, and what else do you really need?
We came home a different way--down Highway 28 (as immortalized in song by Paul Butterfield, hence an easy choice) and there were no further incidents.
I trust this answers any questions you may have.
