Why laugh? Andrew Eldritch has been a big Patti fan since he was young.
Although he's never (to my knowledge) given her the influence or stature
that someone like Stipe does - he usually reserves that for Leonard Cohen -
he has gone on record as saying Patti was a big influence on him early on. 
Not that its the same or anything, but remember Sisters Of Mercy had a song
called 1959 way back on Floodland.
