In general, after various experiences over the past year or two, I'm
mostly for just talking around and over and under things that bother me--
I have a theory that "turn the other cheek" means, not turn it to be hit
again, but more like a Tai Chi move-- change the scene, change worlds.
And though it can be hard I strongly believe in not letting someone
silence you, that you're more likely to change things by speaking up.
However-- I would like to say that I would strongly prefer, as Alison
said, an issue-oriented approach if things get hot, instead of hurling
insults, and ESPECIALLY, making assumptions about the lives of people one
really doesn't know. It takes a lot more listening, and respect, and even
humbleness, to come close to "knowing" someone. Even people who live
together often don't know each other that well, so it's foolish to
assume things about someone you probably only know through e-mail. And if
you happen to hit on a nerve and drive someone away, what's that to be
proud of? Often what bothers us is something we don't like in
ourselves reflected back enlarged. Call me on it too if I do it!
