The punks were rebelling against someone or something
but what was the target of their anger?  I think you've got it about
right above, it was the junk AOR (album-oriented rock) stadium acts
that were really soft and cute and top-40-disguised-with-long-hair-
and-guitar-solos stuff of the 70's.  Really corporate, formula, boring. 
A few punks might have said they hated the Stones or the Dead too ...

The other thing was radio.  Patti has talked about that more than
almost anyone.  Radio that went from a medium where at least a few
stations were free-form and creative to a medium where everything was
controlled with lists designed to capture a market niche.  

I remember the one time I saw Johnny Thunders and he was yelling at us
(the audience) calling us a bunch of fucking lazy hippies that never 
change but I can't help thinking that the punks and hippies had more
in common than just ripped jeans.
