I think it was real. All in all, it appeared that she didn't really
want to be where she was, doing what she was doing. And she took it out
on the audience. The audience level of an audience that was there for
the third night in a row might be a little lower (I don't know...I
wasn't there Tues or Wed.)...but geeeez, get over it. It IS a compliment
you know... I also thought that she should have done at least something
from the first three albums. She was annoyed that people were asking
for oldies and I kind of felt that her not doing old songs on Thursday
and cancelling "Horses" etc. was kind of a "fuck you" to her audience
too.
Not that the songs weren't well performed -- they really were excellent
for the most part. And I enjoyed seeing a lot of the new stuff live.
Though I must say that the interplay between Patti and the band wasn't
there either. She didn't joke around with them, and smile and laugh
with them the way she has at many other shows. Not even Oliver. She was
just in a reeeeal bad place.
I have to agree that, compared with most of the Patti shows I've seen
over the past two years (Irving Plaza, Central Park(s), Moma, Tibet,
Tienemman Square, Hoboken, Brownies, various songs sung at Lenny's or
Oliver's shows....etc.), this was definitely my least favorite Patti
show too. Early in Thursday's show, I was determined to scalp a ticket
for Halloween at any price, etc., but quite honestly by the end of the
show I just couldn't be bothered...
I'd be interested in hearing from people who were there the other nights
whether she was more...cheerful..then..

I think he has really improved a lot, and his stage presence is much
better than before. No more huddling off to the corner facing away from
the audiece...and he knows and is comfortable with all the songs. He was
playing a les paul too, which gave the band a chunkier sound that it
needed...(though I would lose the Flanger...). I msut say, though, the
best guitarist on stage was Robert Hunter when he was there -- and I
thought the highest energy level for the whole band, and the time they
and Patti seemed the happiest, was when he was there too (kind of the
way everybody in the family acts friendly when a guest comes over...).
