Well, coincidentally, yesterday I just installed a new CD-ROM drive in
my PC, partly because my old one (it was a lowly 2X model from Creative
Labs) couldn't play the Dylan CDPlus title, "Greatest Hits Volume 3".

But my new one is an NEC Multispin 8V, and I can assure you this NEC
does play the multimedia music CD titles (enhanced CD, CD Plus, CD Extra
- these refer to different technologies, BTW, even though they're used
interchangeably. A CD-ROM may play one type and not the other - as my
friend's 8X model from Gateway can't play the Dylan CDPlus but can play
an enhanced CD.)

I did experience some problems installing what is supposed to be a
simple plug-and-play device into a Windows95 PC, so if anyone is having
problems, let me know 'cause I just spent a few hours with NEC
technicians. (It wasn't NEC's fault, but limitations with Windows95.)
Now it works great, though.

You can get the Quicktime software from Apple's website
(http://quicktime.apple.com/), and also there, is info regarding
enhanced CDs (http://music.apple.com/music/ecd_index3.html); another
good place to start may be this page:
http://www.emf.net/~mal/cdplus.html.

[The Dylan CD doesn't use Quicktime, but a proprietary format which
installs all the necessary software, but when you exit, it also deletes
it automatically.]

If that Arista sampler title contains any Patti Smith multimedia
(photos, video, etc.), it would be worth getting. Is it something
generally available?
