While Artaud was in the asylum at Rodez, an incarceration which coincided
with the German occupation of France, he suffered (or enjoyed) the delusion
that Andre Breton (who had fallen out with Artuad years earlier) was
actively involved in an underground plan to liberate Artaud by force. This
eventually evolved into the belief that Breton had been killed leading an
unsuccessful commando raid against the asylum. When Breton and Artaud met
again after the war, Artaud refused (at least at first) to believe that
Breton was alive.

There's a French movie whose title escapes me, a few years old, about the
last week or so of Artaud's life. Haven't seen it, though.
