Hail the surface of our speech
Hail the spirit whom we greet
Hail the dance in cryptic air
Hail the heart the holy hare

Hail the surface that s/he waltzed...

Patti Smith held a press conference Thursday April 27 at the FondationCartier on the eve of the opening of one of the major cultural events in Paris this spring, Patti's art show, entitled LAND 250 after her Polaroid camera. Major news stories have already appeared in world press about the show, including the AP, Time Magazine (New York), The London Guardian, The Canadian Press and of course, most of the big newspapers and magazines in Paris, including The Libiration, Le Figaro, L Express and Radio France.

At the press conference Patti talked about her work and then performed GRATEFUL, while her son Jackson assisted her by holding the microphone.

Smith said, "Since 1967 I've been drawing, painting, taking photographs and writing poetry. This exhibition gives me an opportunity to share the work I've been doing in another way other than in music. In rock and roll I speak out on human rights, or against war. In other fields of art I express my own inner world which is not political. It's the beginning of a dialogue between me and the people to show the diversity of my world."

Smith explained that when she first returned to music after her Detroit sabbatical, she felt, "emotionally unable to express myself, and taking Polaroid pictures was simple and immediate. It helped restore my confidence at a difficult period.

While visiting Paris for the LAND 250 show, Smith noted she is staying at "a little hotel that overlooks the Montparnasse graveyard. I find graves a place of beauty. I do not find them sad. They are a resting place, a meeting point for the meditation of the living."
