I think it (taping policy) depends more on the venue than on the artist.

Also in my experience it's the kind of thing that if you ask, they will
automatically say no, but then some places will actually enforce it and
others won't.

Just wondering if Patti is allowing videotaping at the upcoming shows in
the US.? I'll be seeing her in Ann Arbor, MI tomorrow night.? Last time
in Detroit I saw many tapers (inc. video), however, the Michigan Theater
is a completely different type of venue.? Anyone have any feedback from
the show last night??? Can't wait to see them.........

Hey Folks:

Is there anyone driving down to Santa Cruz from San Francisco early on the day of the show (15th)? I need a ride and would be willing to buy gasoline. I have a ride home lined up.

I would like to be there a couple of hours before the doors open....

  Please e-mail off list.

  Li

So like I was sayin'... amazing. Here's something else the
band is doing better -- pacing. The lags between songs are
really pared down to almost nothing. I think the days of
boots where every other track is a 2-minute non-song are
behind us.

Patti did chat with us a bit, still -- about her girlhood,
and being able to afford an afternoon in downtown Philly
just on what she made for an afternoon of babysitting.
(I think this is still true, it just depends on your
definition of "babysitting"). And, some of her struggles:
with the "14 verses" in the Dylan cover, and, during
the encore, about her struggle with gas pains - right
then and there.

Maybe it was because it was only the opener of the tour,
bu everyone looked great and rested, and well dressed.

I'm loving the hell out of twelve, and I'm really loving
the live performances of these songs. I'm loving the extra
kick they're giving "Southern Cross", I'm loving Patti
actually playing a melody on the clarinet, and I guess I'm just
in general loving me some Patti+band. Tickets were only
25 bucks. A bargain!! More money for the merchandise stand!

I just took a quick look at Pollstar and saw how short
the tour really is, so I'm REALLY loving the fact that
they included Philly. Feels like it's been a while.

(Oh, what I'm NOT loving? Obnoxious merch-stand lady,
who was fascinating in a kind of MadTV sketch character
kind of way - free entertainment! - and the person who
wanted me to sit down during the last 3 minutes of the
show, during RnRN. I mean, really. Is it any surprise that
these two knew each other and were chatting before the
show? I think not!)

Patti's crew were actively discouraging close-up flash photography and
video-taping at the recent European concerts. Video-taping from
balconies (for instance) seemed to be okay though. If you've ever
seen Patti perform before you'll already know that she detests flash
photography from the front of the crowd. Please don't do it - just
watch the show!

Kind regards

Andrew

There was a "Great American Smoke Out" were people
who wanted to quit smoking didn't light up for one day.

When I glanced at this "shoot-out..... Union Square" at
first I thought it was an anti dope rally or something,
given the reputation the park had.

From what I understand, this information is not accurate. It
doesn't require just "any group" of two or more people with a camera
to obtain a permit and insurance, as it says below. The law would
require a permit for large groups of people for short or long shoots
(I'm not claiming to be any expert on this either, but think its 5 or
more using a tripod for 10 minutes or more), and for the smaller "two
or more" groups its only if they are filming in the same place for
over half an hour. it is intended to regulate film crews and pros.
not tourists and casual photographers.

I have mixed feelings about it myself. On the one hand, I'm pretty
sick of obnoxious film crews who think they own the city and can tell
me what street I can and can't walk down. I live in an area where
this happens fairly frequently (they used to film Sex in the City
near me, ugh). And I don't have a problem with them requiring
insurance for pros. It protects the passers by. Universities can
purchase a master policy that protects its students. On the other
hand, I do think this law as currently written is too broad and would
allow the police too much room for hassling people who have done
nothing wrong. . Maybe the permit requirement, if any, should depend
more on what they are doing on the shoot and how much public property
they are going to be taking up during the shoot, rather than the
number of people involved.

Its great to have discussion about it...or a protest...but, either
way, whoever the group is that's organizing the protest isn't doing
itself or its members a favor by misrepresenting the proposed law
they are protesting.

Sounds to me like it will mostly impact on low-budget, independent
photographers and filmmakers who will not be able to afford the liability
insurance. Professional crews that film regularly in the city are already
required to get a permit and insurance to block off streets and sidewalks.

Im not in New York, in fact Im not even in America, but speaking as an
observer from the other side of the Atlantic, it looks like a bad idea to me.
Its bad news for creativity - and Warner Bros will still be telling you which
street you can walk down while they make Sex in the City!!

I can relate (having worked as an extra and having lost my location
pass once, yes the off duty cops they use like to throw their weight
around). I laughed my head off the first time I saw the movie "The
Out of Towners" when they get kicked out of a church by a film
crew.

NYC Might Demand Permits for Filming

Wednesday August 1, 2007 1:46 PM

By DAVID B. CARUSO

Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Civil liberties advocates are gearing up for a potential court
fight over proposed rules that would force filmmakers and photographers to get
permits and $1 million insurance policies to film or take pictures in one of
the world's most photographed cities.

New regulations drafted by the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and
Broadcasting would require a permit for any type of filming or photography
that involved ``an interaction among two or more people at a single site for
30 or more minutes.''

Permits would also be required for five or more people using a tripod for more
than 10 minutes.

The rules would be nothing new for professional crews that film regularly in
the city; they have long been required to get a permit and insurance to block
off streets and sidewalks.

But critics say the proposed rules would affect a new class of shooters:
fashion and wedding photographers, independent journalists doing street
interviews, and amateurs making videos to post online.

The New York Civil Liberties Union is prepared to take action against the
regulations in court if they're enacted without revision, said one of the
organization's lawyers, Christopher Dunn.

``There is no way that they should be requiring permits for people using
handheld cameras,'' Dunn said. ``It would give the police license to stop
virtually anyone, and that opens the door to harassment.''

Documentary filmmaker Jennifer Livingston called the proposal ``draconian,''
and a betrayal of the city's long history of nurturing budding talent.

``Think of that young artist who is going to be hurried along by some cop, who
has no choice but to follow regulations,'' she said. ``I would hate to see
film students thinking that any time they make an image, it has to be
sanctioned by the government.''

City officials insist the rules aren't an attempt to quash free speech.

People unable to afford liability insurance, which could cost between $500 and
$1,000 for even the smallest of photo shoots, could apply to the city for a
waiver.

Journalists with a press pass issued by the police department would be exempt.
So would anyone using handheld equipment to film a parade, rally or political
demonstration.

Julianne Cho, associate commissioner of the film office, said the city's only
intention was to help filmmakers get safe access to great locations, while
ensuring that production didn't obstruct traffic or interfere with New
Yorkers' lives.

The city is accepting public comment on the proposed rules until Friday and
could still make changes.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, photographers of all types have increasingly
complained about harassment.

D. Bruce Yolton, an amateur nature photographer, said he was run off by a
police officer last spring when he tried to take pictures of a hawk nesting on
the Triborough Bridge.

Things will only get worse under the new rules, he said. He wondered whether
the regulations would result in officers cracking down on groups of amateur
bird watchers gathering to stake out wildlife.

``There is no way for me to apply for a permit,'' he said. ``For one thing, I
never know where the bird is going to be.''

The film office drafted the proposed rules earlier this year as a result of a
lawsuit involving an independent filmmaker detained for using a handheld video
camera in midtown Manhattan.

Rakesh Sharma, the Indian director of the award-winning 2003 documentary
``Final Solution,'' was told he needed a permit to record images of the
MetLife building near Grand Central Terminal, even if he had no crew and no
equipment besides his camera.

The New York Civil Liberties Union sued, arguing, in part, that the city had
never properly enacted regulations governing film permits. The case was
settled and the film office agreed to formalize its rules.

So, I was isolated at the shore Friday morning when
the Beacon went on sale and I am taking what I can
get at the Beacon.

I was only there once, and my impression was that the
downstairs was really really wide and one doesn't want
to be way off to the side, or you won't hear or see
much, and from others' reports of concerts there, my
understanding is that the same can be said for the
upper decks (the loge and the balcony).
I.e., the place swallows sightlines and sound whole.

>From folks who have been inside all over the place,
what's your opinion? Am I better off in the center
of the balcony than the last seat on the far right
in row J on the floor? Is the upper balcony a world
of difference from the lower balcony? Should I
pursue front and center orch at any cost because
anything else there is a waste of time?

My priority is not having sucky sound. I pretty much
know what everyone in the band looks like by now.

A few notes:
She spoke about historical preservation of architecture, and the importance
of keeping fuckers like Trump from trumping our history.
And of seeing a giant guinea pig in a neighboring yard, that later, she
realized, was a rabbit (Enter White Rabbit).
She sung to a very small child, maybe four years old, at the side of the
stage.
She ignored the drunk girl at the front of the stage that kept shouting
ridiculous things/insults.
Oh, and Jackson plays extremely well. Plus he's really cute :)

August 6 in Minneapolis was also very enjoyable. Patti was as
talkative as I've seen in my 7 or shows seeing her (and very
entertaining!).
The State Theater, though lovely, was not as conducive to an
extraordinary show as First Avenue has been, where she's played the
past few times through town.
But great fun nonetheless.
Heres her set list from the State Theatre on Monday (from Star
Tribune--but matches my recollection):

1. Kimberly 2. Redondo Beach 3. Changing of the Guards (Bob Dylan) 4.
Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix) 5. Within You/Without You
(Beatles) 6. Southern Cross 7. We 3 8. Summer Cannibals 9. Pushing
Too Hard (Seeds song sung by Lenny Kaye) 10. White Rabbit (Jefferson
Airplane) 11. Because the Night 12. Soul Kitchen (Doors) 13. Midnight
Rider (Allman Bros) 14. Smells Like teen Spirit (Nirvana) 15. People
Have the Power

encores 16. Helpless (Neil Young) 17. Gimme Shelter (Stones) 18. Rock
n Roll Nigger

I've been around the list for a few years, but rarely post, however this was
so wonderful I have to share my experience with you people.

The Minneapolis show was one of the best I've been to from Patti, this is my
fourth time seeing her in Minneapolis. It is true the First Avenue would
have been better. I think Patti would have had to play two shows for that
venue, though. The last time I was at the First Avenue it was for Neko
Case, and they oversold, it was horrible down by the stage, warm and hard to
breathe for most people, though my friend and I had a small pocket of air
because I was being a concert troll and keeping a space for air in front of
us by moving back and forth and not letting anyone in, so the State Theater
at least gave us space, but I don't think Patti liked the place or the
security there too much.

It was my husband's first time seeing Patti, I usually go to concerts with
my best friend, because my husband doesn't like going to concerts, but I
really wanted him to see how amazing Patti is, and he agreed, he said it was
a wonderful concert and that Patti was great. He really enjoyed it.

To me, the concert started a little slow, never been a fan of Redondo Beach
or Kimberly, and the fact that people were coming in late was a tad
annoying, but all in all it turned out to be a great show. My highlight was
Summer Cannibals, that's one of my favorites. I especially loved Rock n
Roll Nigger and her getting the audience riled up at the end.

It was weird, someone was smoking pot there, I haven't been in a concert
when I smelled that for at least 20 years, I thought that was funny. My
husband thought the guy that was yelling play Rock n Roll the N word needed
to be taken out and thumped, lol.

I waited so long for this concert and it went so fast, I feel like wow, I
wish Patti would play here every 6 months hahaha. Definetely one of the
best concerts I've seen this year.

Was lucky enough to catch Patti in Seattle--after missing her in Colorado. A guess---she played to about 1000 people at The Show Box theatre. Killer versions of Are You Experienced, Southern Cross, Summer Cannibals, Because the Night, People Have the Power, Lenny Kaye's leading ofPushin' too Hard, REM's Everybody Hurts, and Rock n Roll Nigger. Peter Buck of REM joined the show for the last few songs plus the encores.

Hi,

I am looking for these recordings. If anyone still has the flacs from
the downloads I'd be very happy if you contact me.

Thanks a lot!

Patti Smith - White Session, Paris 2004 [no label 1CD] live at Studio
105, Maison De La Radio, Paris, Oct 22 2004. This is an incredible
show. Patti is convincingly subtle away from a boisterous audience.
Incldues People Have The Power and Because The Night. Digital FM
broadcast. Ex FM
[Track 3 has skip at 2.56m mark. This is in the original broadcast.
Also slight error on Track 6.

Patti Smith - At The Cirkus 2004 [Crystal Cat 2CD] live at the
Cirkus, Stockholm, Sweden, July 13 2004, tour to support Trampin'. Ex
SBD stereo. Some have said this is an audience recording. To my ears,
it's soundboard.

Patti Smith - Camden 2005 [no label 1CD Torrent: 112535] live at
Wiggins Park, Camden, New Jersey, July 24, 2005 and broadcast on
"WXPN All About The Music Festival". "The first two songs are without
drums as Jay Dee Daugherty was "delayed on a series of train and
plane mishaps." Ex SBD/AUD Matrix mix.

What a fantastic show! I brought my sister with me and she had never had the "patti experience" and she was completely blown away. This was perhaps my 8th time seeing Patti and it was one of the best ever, however I still can't stop thinking about that show on November 18, 1998 in Washington, DC. Wowsa.

The Seattle show will definitely go down as one of my best memories. Patti told a little story about going on a sake tasting (that afternoon??) and described how one sake wasn't so great so she had to get the taste out of her mouth with another taste of something else and so on, this then lead to a "fudge" tasting in another shop and finally she found herself some tea.....

: )

I'm probably forgetting something, but I believe this was the set from last night:

kimberly
redondo beach
everybody wants to rule the world
we three
are you experienced
because the night
soul kitchen
beneath the southern cross
within you without you
summer cannibals
white rabbit
ghost dance
smells like teen spirit
pushing too hard (Lenny intro and peter buck sitting in, sublime)
gloria
people have the power
everybody hurts
rock n roll nigger

---

Peace everyone.....

In retrospect, now I think that little sake/fudge/tea rap was her intro to White Rabbit.

What a great show! Roughly two hours with the band - including Jackson - and
they were in rare form! As usual, Patti fed off the energy of the audience
and they couldn't get enough of her & the band. If you go expecting to hear
the new / old songs as they are on the CD, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The tracks were reworked for the stage and the live versions are quite
stunning. Tracks covered from 'Twelve' included 'Are You Experienced',
'Within You Without You', 'White Rabbit', 'Soul Kitchen', 'Smells Like Teen
Spirit', 'Everybody Hurts'. Peter Buck joined the band for a handful of
songs toward the end of the show.

If a recording of this show exists, I'd sure like to get a copy! Thanks to
Patti & the band for a great night!

Pretty good list, except Patti didn't play that Tears for fears song,
Luckily!
Lennys solo number ( the Seeds song) was pretty cool, Patti came out and did
a big yawn during Lennys lead, then danced with him.
During that rap on the sake and fudge tasting, someone asked if she tried
any Northwest ganga, and she said well, no body offered her any of that! It
was pretty funny.
Maybe I missed this earlier, but I got a 12 shirt at the show with a pic of
a little girl and a rabbit. Anyone know who it is?

yeah, I was wrong about the tears for fears song, must have heard it in the car and got confused. I think Are you Experienced was the first cover.

Are you talking about the feed your head shirt??? That was pretty cool.

I wonder if it's patti or some family member of hers.....

That really was one of the best shows I've ever seen and lots of ganga was being burned that night......

That picture (it's the same as on Patti's website?) is a famopus photo of the girl that "Alice in Wonderland" was written for. That's Alice! I forget her last name.

I will see Patti in San Francisco tonight and Santa Cruz tiomorrow. Thanks for all your reviews, I'm sure we're in for a great show - after all, this is the White Rabbit hole.

  Be well all,

  Li

No, it was guitar.................Seattle Showbox was totally awesome, it ranks at the top of the Patti performances I have seen. The crowd was feeding off Patti and Patti was feeding off the people. She gave it all to us...............jd

What a great show! Roughly two hours with the band - including Jackson -
and
they were in rare form! As usual, Patti fed off the energy of the
audience
and they couldn't get enough of her & the band. If you go expecting to
hear
the new / old songs as they are on the CD, you'll be pleasantly
surprised.
The tracks were reworked for the stage and the live versions are quite
stunning. Tracks covered from 'Twelve' included 'Are You Experienced',
'Within You Without You', 'White Rabbit', 'Soul Kitchen', 'Smells Like
Teen
Spirit', 'Everybody Hurts'. Peter Buck joined the band for a handful of
songs toward the end of the show.

If a recording of this show exists, I'd sure like to get a copy! Thanks
to
Patti & the band for a great night!

John

hi fellow fans,
I'd bought 2 tix to see Patti in NY at the Beacon Theater on Sep. 14, but now realize I'll be away bringing my daughter to college. the tix are for upper balcony seats. they were $50 plus TicketMaster fees = $60 for the pair. I hate to see them left unused, so if you'd like to purchase them, please mail me off this list.

John

For "Smells Like Teen Spirit" when I saw her in Minneapolis last week she had some guy on banjo named Dave (?) that they "found on the street" in Minneapolis. haha When I saw them do the same song at Lollapalooza 2 days before there was no banjo. Oh and also the Minneapolis show had Dan Murphy and Dave Pirner from Soul Asylum playing along and Tony Glover on harmonica.

Tony Glover? I think really early in Patti's career, early 70's, she
performed with him and there was a rumor of a live album that someday
Patti was going to release. It was supposed to be called Rock N
Rimbaud. I don't think it has ever surfaced even as a bootleg or a
tape. Has anybody heard of this?

PATTI SMITH TURNS IN LEGENDARY CONCERT
    By Jim Harrington STAFF WRITER
Contra Costa Times
8/15/2007 When Patti Smith released the cover-song collection "Twelve" earlier this year, it was seen by many as a stopgap, something that would hold fans over until the punk-rock pioneer got around to recording her next batch of originals.

Skeptics figured that her label, Columbia Records, wanted to have some new product on shelves to coincide with Smith's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their hunch appeared to be further validated by the songs Smith chose to record on "Twelve," a mostly obvious collection of tunes from such often-covered giants as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and the Doors. That hypothesis, however, took a mighty beating on Tuesday night at the Fillmore in San Francisco as the 60-year-old Chicago native turned in an inspired two-hour-plus performance that was highlighted by "Twelve" material. Performing in front of a capacity crowd and fronting her regular Patti Smith Group, which includes longtime collaborator/guitarist Lenny Kaye, the vocalist took these well-known cover songs and transformed them into pieces that felt as exciting and as original as anything in her own songbook. Of course, Smith has a healthy track record in such
pursuits. Most notably, her heavily re-worked version of Van Morrison's "Gloria," which she recorded on 1975's "Horses," stands as a classic in its own right. After opening the show with a pair of "Horses" cuts, the hypnotic "Kimberly" and the bouncy "Redondo Beach," Smith picked up her clarinet and began blowing out what could be loosely called free jazz. Her fellow musicians joined in with some spacey noodling that might've pleased the Deadheads in the crowd. Then, suddenly, out of the vast unknown, a song began to materialize -- Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" Veteran concertgoers hear Hendrix covered frequently, but few acts can pull it off convincingly. That's where Smith's pedigree and her authenticity come into play. When she roars out the lyrics "Have you ever been experienced? Well, I have," there's simply no doubting her qualifications to walk in Jimi's shoes. Smith loves playing at the Fillmore, a place where she always seems to put on a great show,
and was very talkative and warm to the crowd. She spoke of the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love and of that season's significant events during her introduction to the Beatles' "Within You Without You." "This little song by George Harrison is dedicated to the 40th anniversary of everything," she said. Harrison would have been proud of the rendition of this number, which Smith has called "the forgotten song of 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.'' The Eastern-style arrangement was fairly sparse and meditative and the lyrics were delivered with gentle care, allowing the crowd to focus on Harrison's message that "with our love, we could save the world." She followed with a couplet of mesmerizing beauties from 1996's "comeback" album "Gone Again," "Beneath the Southern Cross" and "Wing," the latter of which she dedicated to the imprisoned John Walker Lindh (better known as the "American Taliban"). Just when things started to get a bit heavy, Smith
lightened the load by discussing Christina Aguilera (which she pronounced "Aguliera," like malaria). But this wasn't a tirade against the pop diva -- it was a heartfelt compliment about the Grammy performance delivered by "Aguliera." "The reason I bring that up," Smith said, "is that (her performance) made me want to do better." Then, like a gauntlet had been thrown, the vocalist took her act to the next level as she ranted through a powerful version of the "Gone Again"-track "Summer Cannibals" and then dove headfirst back into "Twelve." This segment produced some of the most delightful moments of the concert, including a psychedelic version of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" that would have pleased even the savviest of hookah-smoking caterpillars. Sounding every bit as slippery sexy as the original Lizard King, Jim Morrison, Smith then turned up the burners on the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" and provided a slice of Nirvana with a sensational take on "Smells Like
Teen Spirit." She closed the main set by revisiting Van the Man's timeless spelling lesson "Gloria." What appeared to be a stopgap on record turned out, in concert, to be a batch of material that fans wished would never stop. In the end, Patti Smith proved more than just that she is worthy of covering such artists as Dylan, the Beatles and the Stones. Indeed, she showed that she deserves to be ranked alongside all of them as one of the greatest performers in rock history.
