In the same building, where last year was held the
"People have the Power" tribute night to Patti Smith,
Patti and band are to give two concerts on 19 and 20
June in Christiania (near Copenhagen).
Christiania is one of the oldest and best known
squatter communities in Europe. Originally a military
installation it was peacefully taken over by squatters
in 1973. After Denmark moved politically to the right
after 2001 elections the pressure has been gradually
building for Christiania and other alternative
societies in Denmark to "normalize". And in a related
situation, earlier this year, the "Youth House"
(Ungdomshuset) was torn down after a bitter struggle
that caused some of the worst riots seen here in
years. This bitterness lingers, and recently there
were street battles outside of Christiania, after a
structure was taken under police protection inside of
Christiania.
So Patti and band will be performing in a highly
politicized and demoralize Christiania, looking for
inspiration.
