Thanks to Gary Jucha I have the CDs of her New Year's run at the Bowery (Dec
29,30,31 2006). I will send copies, noBnoP, to the first five who agree to
pass them on similarly; since the weed seems to be progressing nicely, I can
include one or two "leaves" who don't have the facility to copy CDs.

Also (NPC) I'd be interested in trading for material from the 80's Japanese
band Blue Hearts or the movie-spinoff Paranmaum.

PATTI SMITH on MEETING JIMI HENDRIX:

I was fortunate enough to have had a little discussion with Jimi Hendrix on the steps of Electric Lady studio. It happened when he was leaving a big party for the opening of his studio. I had been invited to the party, but I was too shy to go in, because it was my first rock and roll party. I didnt really know what to do, so I just sat on the steps. And suddenly out came Jimi Hendrix. He was on his way to the Isle of Wright festival and I got to see him leave. He asked me what I was doing sitting there and said, "Hey, I'm kind of shy too." So we sat on the steps and he talked about his vision of the studio and what he wanted to do when he came back from London. He said he wanted to create a new language with musicians from all over the world; to create an atmosphere where at first there might be a cacophony because of all their different approaches, but by playing together after some months they would find some common thread. So he had great visions for the studio, but
then he was gone. He never came back. So I felt we were very privileged to record HORSES at Electric Lady, but I dont think we were exactly what he had in mind. But it was so exciting and so wonderful to go into that studio and be able to do a body of work there. I also had to learn a lot of new stuff, like how to improvise in a vocal booth, which was kind of scary. Also, at that time you had to mix by hand, and I had done nine different poems to put on LAND so we had to write down all the words on long strips of paper and then (producer) John Cale, Lenny and I, we all had to have a couple of faders and bring them up and pull them down at different times. So I had all these little cryptic notes, like when it says Tower of Babel, you have to bring up, build it, build it, build it. It was pretty exciting. I remember we also had to record REDONDO BEACH at four in the morning, because that was the only time available, and I lived nearby on Macdougal street and Lenny had
to come by and wake me up when we all went into the studio to record REDONDO BEACH. That was driving John Cale so crazy, that he finally started banging his head against the speakers. Luckily it was at the end of the record.

"I Go to Sleep " is actually a Ray Davies Kinks song that the Pretenders
covered. Ray originally wrote it for Peggy Lee in the 60's and the KinKs did
record it. Although a great song, I'd rather see her cover The KinKs " I'm Not
Like Everybody Else " which has the People Have the Power kind of energy.

God save the KinKs!

Although it's really a Jefferson Starship song.. I think Patti would do a
kickass version of "Ride the Tiger"..

For a true JA song, "Crown of Creation" or "Lather" or even "Somebody to Love".

I didn't know it was a Kinks' song- thanks for telling me. I do like the
Pretenders' version, though. Did Peggy Lee ever do a version of it? It would
have been perfect for her. xxo- Seena

This is Patti's Twelve album so I'm assuming thats where the title comes
from.
Or is it that it has 12 songs-I'm hoping it might even be a double
album,either way I can't wait to hear it !!!
I bet there are some great surprises-
Best Wishes,
Valerie.

Hello everyone,

I enjoy being a part of this list and reading all the posts. I don't email
much because I am so intimidated by everyones knowledge of Patti and music
in general.
Your all going to think I'm completely bonkers but its a cover I've always
thought Patti would be very suited for.
I would love to hear her do Rock Of Ages by Def Leppard.
I can just hear her "Rise up, gather 'round, rock this place to the
ground.Burn it up lets go for broke, watch the night go up in smoke!"

I know, dont laugh! LOL! Anyway thanks for reading,
Lybbie

Ray Davies recorded a demo of "I go to Sleep " and most hard kore KinKs fans
have this in their Kinks Kollection. It's by far the best of the version of
the other 2 I know of one by the Pretenders and even Peggy Lee's version who Ray
originally wrote the song for in the 60's. Ray has been known to do this song
on occasion at some of his solo shows that he began doing in 1996.

See you at Toads, The Stone Pony and Tibet (with RAY)
Just look for the Kinks shirt!
God Save the KinKs!

Anyway, 12/31 has the same lineage as the previous 2:
audience recording by gordo55 and taperjon. If you
haven't heard any of this yet, it's awesome recording
quality, and she sounds great this year and is in top
comedic form and has a great attitude.

Actually, its 1983 ...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)

And Patti referenced it long ago on Horses, in Elegie (although her lyric
isn't an exact quote from Jimi):

but I think it's sad, it's much too bad
That our friends can't be with us today.

Actually she did a wonderful version of 1983 in London in 2005 in which she almost rapped the lyrics. I'm really glad Are You Experienced? is on Twelve but it might've been nice to just have done an album of songs from the Hendrix songbook like jazz vocalists do songs from the Cole Porter songbook.

Wasn't a song by Television a definite? And did Patti not admit that
the Dylan song will be Changing of the Guard?

US publication date is stated as January 2008 - UK publication date
April 2008. Given how far in the future they are, these dates are
just tentative. Last November Patti admitted that she'd "not written
it yet".

Kind regards

You're usually right Andrew!
I would love her to sing one of these Dylan songs though-'Every Grain of
Sand','Blowin in The Wind', or' Forever Young' (very appropriate)!!
Best Wishes,
Valerie.

I haven't heard of it, but there's something very un-patti about
that title. I swear it sounds like somebody else wrote it. It's too
long and clunky.

My understanding is that it is the biography of her time in the early years with Mapplethorp. At first I thought it was a kid's book, from the title, and no info...

Mark in St. Louis...anxiously awaiting the Providence show...
The Earth, with all of its grandeur, is given from the same source as our souls. How can we grasp the aspect of attaining wholeness for our souls, when that judgment day comes, and not be aware that the other gifts we have been given, and the condition with which we have maintained them, will not also be a point of accountability?

I think that was the point of the Songs of Experience night at Meltdown in
2005. I'm not sure we're likely to see a "Patti sings Jimi" album, nor a
"Patti sings Dylan," "Patti sings the Doors," etc.

Those would all be fun, but I'll be happy with Twelve, as well as the
pseudo-cover albums that listmembers have put together from various concert
recordings.

hi all,

another offer for five copies of all three bowery shows. i won't be
able to get them out until next weekend, but if you're out in the cold and can
wait a week, email me offlist, creatrixx

and here's my (possibly
lame and definitely unattainable) wish that patti would cover one song from
the monkees (yes i said The Monkees!) -- an antiwar song called Zor and Zam.
anybody out there know it?

OMG Jackie, I remember that song. "The king of Zor he called for war but the king of Zam he hadn't said." Or something like that. That would be an interesting choice for her to cover and very timely too!! What was the final line? Something like "What if they gave a war and nobody came"......Brilliant idea

hi all,

another offer for five copies of all three bowery shows. i won't be
able to get them out until next weekend, but if you're out in the cold and can
wait a week, email me offlist, creatrixx

and here's my (possibly
lame and definitely unattainable) wish that patti would cover one song from
the monkees (yes i said The Monkees!) -- an antiwar song called Zor and Zam.
anybody out there know it?

Columbia Records Announces The Release of 'Twelve,' an Album of
Classic Songs Newly Interpreted By 2007 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
Inductee Patti Smith
Tuesday February 6, 5:00 am ET
Album Available Tuesday, April 17

NEW YORK, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records will release Twelve,
the eagerly-anticipated album of "cover" versions of classic popular
songs newly interpreted by the 2007 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee
Patti Smith, on Tuesday, April 17.

Twelve is Patti Smith's first album of new studio recordings since
trampin', her Columbia Records debut, was released in 2004, and is the
artist's first-ever full-length collection of songs originally created
by other performers.

On Twelve, Patti Smith and her band -- Lenny Kaye (guitar), Jay Dee
Daugherty (drums) and Tony Shanahan (bass, keyboards) -- work their
magic on a surprising selection of classic songs and overlooked
treasures from the rock & roll canon including "Pastime Paradise" by
Stevie Wonder, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears for Fears
and "Helpless" by Neil Young. Also on Twelve, Smith and company
interpret songs by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, the Doors, Nirvana,
Jefferson Airplane, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Allman
Brothers, and Paul Simon.

An assortment of guest artists appear with Patti on Twelve including
Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima; playwright Sam Shepard (with whom
Patti collaborated on "Cowboy Mouth" in 1971) on banjo; early 60s
Greenwich Village folk artists John Cohen (banjo) and Peter Stampfel
(fiddle); Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea; Television guitarist
Tom Verlaine; the Black Crowes' Rich Robinson on slide guitar and
dulcimer; and hip-hop producer Luis Resto (Eminem) on keyboards.
Patti's son, Jackson, and daughter, Jesse, are on-hand to contribute
guitar and vocal respectively.

Patti Smith, whose seminal rock & roll album, Horses, was released in
1975, was presented with the prestigious insignia of Commander of the
Order of the Arts and Letters by French Cultural Minister Renaud
Donnedieu de Vabres at a ceremony in Paris on July 10, 2005. Cited as
an esteemed rock & roll poet laureate, Patti was praised by the French
Cultural Ministry as "one of the most influential artists in women's
rock 'n' roll." The citation also noted Smith's deep appreciation of
the 19th century French poet Arthur Rimbaud.

She was recently named one of the five inductees in the Rock & Roll
Hall of Fame's Class of 2007 along with R.E.M., Van Halen, the
Ronettes, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Patti Smith will
be officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during a
ceremony at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on March 12. "It's a
great honor to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame," said
Smith.

While her groundbreaking vision of "three chord rock merged with the
power of the word" has ensured her place in rock & roll history, Patti
Smith has, throughout her career, developed a reputation as one of pop
music's foremost interpreters, visiting the songs of other musical
artists and transforming them through the lens of her own
understanding, appreciation and imagination. Beginning with her first
single, "Hey Joe," in 1974 and her extrapolations of Van Morrison's
"Gloria" and Chris Kenner's "Land of 1,000 Dances" on her seminal
Horses album in 1975 through her live performances of songs ranging
from "You Light Up My Life" to "My Generation" to her new album,
Twelve, Patti Smith continues to reshape popular music's classic
source materials and make them her own.

WILLIAM SEWARD BURROUGHS

February 5, 1914 - August 2, 1997

"When I become death, death is the seed from which I grow."

A tree forms in heaven that bares loaves and fishes.
The fish are wall-eyed pike caught in the hands of a
pure young brave from an even purer stream.
Thebread of dreams falls to the earth
in a field alive with wildflowers.
The birds are overjoyed
and now as they fly
they see another sky.
The Doctor in heaven watches over us.
The dream virus is the antidote
and the winged spread it.
Fish in the frying pan.
Whistling blue skies.
The ghost of William smiles.

Happy Birthday William.
We love you.

On her new album, Patti has chosen to honor almost exclusively, Rock and Roll bands that were alive and recording in the Summer of Love, 1967. She will of course be playing a three night show at The Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco during her world tour to commerate the summer of love songs on her album. There is also good reason to believe Paul Kantner will be joining Patti at her Fillmore shows, for her cover of Jefferson Starships's...

It is the twelfth album if you also count LAND and LIVE AT VIEILLES
CHARRUES. I imagine that Patti's royalty statements show 11 items at
the moment, so the new title is logical on that basis. Of course
"album" still means "twelve inches" to many of us...

Kind regards

Andrew

I thought it was her 12th album-(not sure),but from recent news it looks
like it has 12 songs as well-so either way' Twelve' is an appropriate title-it
sounds amazing,I can't wait!
Has anyone any idea when( I presume its a world tour) all the dates are
coming out?
Best Wishes,
Valerie.

There's one problem about celebrating the 40 year
anniversary of the Summer of Love: The event in
question started on the summer solstice, 22nd of June
1966!!! (in Haight Ashbury, San Francisco at sunrise).

That makes this year the 41st season.

How could they miss that with a knowledgeable gent
like Lenny Kaye around?

Of course, the music that was born of it didn't
blossom until 1967. It takes a while for such expressions
to go from the minds and note pads of the artists to the small
clubs and festivals.... to the recording studio, the radio
and record bins and off into the great eternal juggernaut
of pop culture.

Peace, loud guitars and flower bombs,

Paul

The wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_of_Love
starts out "The Summer of Love refers to the summer of 1967".
I have always thought of Summer of Love as meaning 1967 in
San Francisco.

Wasn't the "last hippie" actually "buried" in Golden Gate Park in 1967, come to think of it?

thanks to the other undercover monkees fans who liked this idea. here are the
lyrics:

Zor And Zam
The king of Zor, he called for war
And the king of Zam,
he answered.
They fashioned their weapons one upon one
Ton upon ton, they
called for war at the rise of the sun.

Out went the call to one and to all
That echoed and rolled like the thunder.
Trumpets and drums, roar upon roar
More upon more.
Rolling the call of "Come now to war."

Throughout the night
they fashioned their might
With right on the side of the mighty.
They puzzled
their minds plan upon plan
Man upon man
And at dying of dawn the great war
began.

They met on the battlefield banner in hand.
They looked out across the
vacant land.
And they counted the missing, one upon one,
None upon none.
The
war it was over before it begun.

Two little kings playing a game.
They gave a
war and nobody came.
And nobody came.
And nobody came.
And nobody came.
And
nobody came.

On second thought, yes, the Summer happened in '67 with
the big San Francisco Human Be-in for an official starting
point. '67 was a world-wide high water year for the innocent,
flowers and beads hippy thing. By '68 a darker edge began
to emerge; Charles Manson, heroin on Haight St., Hells
Angels on speed, protesting kids trading in their picket signs
for machine guns and pipe bombs.... and some very bad acid.

There was a small group of hipsters in SF in '66 that declared
a "summer of love" a year before at a sunrise gathering. If only
they could have stopped time....

hey the mansonoids created such bad vibes especially in the la area...i grew
up there!!!
the poorer freex were not invited any more parties around laurel canyon,
topanga thanx to their murderous whims....love-ins at griffith park, etc..
would degenerate into culture clashes.
now the 40th anniversary is here!!! i still wish for the niceties of
1965-66-byrds , etc
