While it's nice that Patti is finally in the Hall of Fame, at the same time I was rather surprised at most of the press coverage. Of the five nominees, many paragraphs were devoted to Van Halen and REM. Then a few more to the other two nominees. And finally at the end, there was a line or two about "Punk rocker" Patti Smith.
Isn't that a rather pathetic and sad commentary on why it's taken Patti so long to get into the Hall of (S) fame in the first place. While I'm happy that Patti is glad she has finally gotten in and reconized after all these attempts (her fifth nomination, wasn't it?), in a sense, I really think Patti could make a powerful statement by telling these corporate rock people to go fuck themselves, like the Sex Pistols did last year.
And it would be much more dramatic if she were to do it on stage, in person, (unlike say Marlon Brando at the Oscars, or the Sex Pistols). The whole awards show thing is so anti-rock 'n' roll anyway. Luckily, with Patti, anything is possible, and it's strange to note it won't be seen on VH1 this year. They must haven know Patti would be on the show. But if Patti were to vent her rage against the War in Iraq, rest assured it would be edited out of whatever TV station that may eventually pick up the show for broadcast (especially if it's Fox).
Patti herself has talked about the false values of giving everyone "awards." Not that Patti doesn't deserve it, but with the proliferation of awards shows, it seems rather trivial compared to a war in Iraq that is about to escalate, and the thousands of Iraq people who are dying because of the U.S invasion. To say nothing about the genocide occuring in Somalia and Darfur.
So to my way of thinking, I'll be very surprised if Patti could actually go on stage and accept such an award without speaking out against the war in Iraq and the genocide occuring in Africa.
And come to think of it, maybe she'll even "indict George W. Bush" while she's on stage.
