Hello Listers,

Happy New Year to all.

So, did anyone get a clean capture of the Sirius broadcast? I know that it
won't be allowed at DIME or the Trader's Den. Last time someone posted it to
the Pirate's Bay (they allow just about everything there). Looking forward to
hearing it. Anyone have the setlists from the 30th and last night? Let's see
some reviews!

Phil

Last night at the Poetry Project New Years Marathon reading Patti
sang Qana and told a story about Gregory Corso's grave headstone
having a misspelling of "Spirit" as "Spirt" as well as the cats in
the graveyard ignoring Shelley's grave in preference to his. She
arrived with her guitar in a black plastic garbage bag. A wonderful
day as usual for this event.

On PBS tonight on AMERICAN MASTERS they had a program on photographer
Annie Leibovitz. There was a quick segment with Patti and her comments
on her own portrait.

Try to catch this PBS "American Masters" bio of Annnie Leibovitz. It's
terrific, and Patti comments about
Annie and her photography several times. They also show photos of Patti and
at one point, "Dancin' Barefoot" is used as background music. xxo- Seena

Hi guys,
what were the setlists from the 30th and 31st? I either missed any reporting on here or it wasn't reported. I am very curious but also cursed with the slowest internet connecton in the world so can't be downloading torrents and the like.

Both the 29th (DoL show) and the 30th have been
circulated on Dime. (Apparently the 29th was
initially offered with the wrong disc 2. I missed
all that drama, fortunately.) 12/31/2006 has not
appeared.

Since not everyone can p2p (hee hee), I'm offering
a CD-R weed of the 1st 2 shows (12/29 and 12/30),
from the torrents, for the first 5 folks who respond
in PVT EMAIL.

Anticipating that more than 5 babelistas
will need this, I ask only that you respond to
this initial offer only if you can follow common
weed protocol and not bogart -- that you'll turn
around and offer copies of the set to others on
the list in the same (torrentically challenged)
boat.

everybody.

Look for those folks to re-offer, or maybe some other

received the message below on eternalcafe but not
babel, so passing it on. piratebay is a torrent
download site that does not require membership, so
anyone (w/ a high speed connection, at least) should
be able to pick this up.

Here's a link to the AUD version of Patti's NYE show
on piratebay. I hope to have the Siruis version up
this weekend if someone else doesn't post it first.

Great shows, all three.

Happy New Year, all :-)

I can weed 12/31 (as it was torrented on that non-Dime site)
to five _new_ folks who respond in PVT EMAIL under same terms
as yesterday's offer.

If I confirmed you for yesterday's weed offer (12/29 and
12/30), a copy of 12/31 will now be included as well and
there's no reason to write me about it. (Although, I will
now be getting these out on Saturday instead of Friday.
Don't expect them until next week.)

I'm only putting 5 extra 12/31s out there because Dime
would not let 12/31 be torrented there due to the Sirius
simulcast (yes, even though this is an audience recording
and not ripped from the Sirius simulcast), and as a result,
it seems that, so far, 12/31 is getting far less distribution
than 12/29 and 12/31. And there are certainly folks who would
happily p2p off Dime's tracker but not any others, so...

Anyway, 12/31 has the same lineage as the previous 2:
audience recording by gordo55 and taperjon. If you
haven't heard any of this yet, it's awesome recording
quality, and she sounds great this year and is in top
comedic form and has a great attitude.

wish I had made a weekend of it again this year.

Many Years ago maybe 20 or more at a Christmas show at the Bottom Line in NYC Lenny Kaye also did the great Roy Wood Christmas song " I Wish it could be Christmas Everyday ". Roy Wood one of the unsung under rated heroes in the rock & roll world. Maybe a Move cover song from Patti and the band is next or next Year Father Christmas?

" When I was small I believed in santa claus
Though I knew it was my dad
And I would hang up my stocking at christmas
Open my presents and Id be glad

But the last time I played father christmas
I stood outside a department store
A gang of kids came over and mugged me
And knocked my reindeer to the floor"

Patti appeared after Joy Askew and did "Christmas Bride" (Ray Conniff) dedicating this to Tony and his bride to be. Then she did a duet with Tony of "Blue Christmas".
I believe Lenny also appeared playing guitar during Megan Reilly's spot.

Richard Lloyd said he didn't know any xmas songs and instead did a cover of Hendrix's Spanish Castle Magic.

peace!

Okay -- I got all my takers on the 12/31 standalone deal.

Look for folks to be turning these shows around in
the coming weeks.

In all the torrentin' I just finished, I see that
someone circulated a ~50MB MPEG video of the
"Looking For You" video from '88 on various p2p
sites.

I also see that this was like, a year ago, and no
one's online with any reachable copies right at
the moment.

Anyone got a lead on how I can get my hands on
this??

On PBS tonight on AMERICAN MASTERS they had a program on photographer

Greg,

Yah, the settings etc for Bit Torrent can be really confuysing and
complicated.
OTOH, a couple of weeks ago I found a seeder makiong 3- or
4-different recordings of mostly the Fort Collins show, plus a couple of more.
DL time to dl it all, over broadband? a LOT. But I'll go for it one of these
days.

One bad thing I've found about the BitTorrent is that if you don't
check in for about a week or so, your username is cancelled out [BOOOOO,
HISSSSsssssssssssssss] So, I've had to productive on using many names...I
tell ya, it's GREAT when your parents give you seven or eight names, WHEEEEE!

==Bob

Someone on a R.E.M. listserve who seems to have inside information tells
us that Patti is in along with R.E.M. and Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash,
and the Ronettes. Apparently it will be announced on Monday.

Is there a huge demand at this point for the New Year's show?

I was able to grab the aud. recording seeded on the PB bittorrent
site, and would be happy to start another weed if so. But I don't
want to step on anyone's toes and/or clog up the offers that are
already in motion.

I was going to email the person who started the first weed offlist to
ask, but I've deleted the messages posted here and the archives aren't
working, so I'm unable to.

Anyway, if it's a case of the more the merrier, I'd be happy to jump
in. If the current offer(s) are sufficient to sate everyone's Patti
appetite, then I won't.

I only have 12/31 at this point. I haven't yet jumped onto the other two
that are posted on Dime.

Happy New Year's everyone,

Jim

Not sure if this has been mentioned here. Just came
across a recording of an Ornette Coleman performance
in Modena Italy, Oct. 10, '06. Patti makes an
appearance, singing on two songs.

"Most interesting is the vocal starting a little over
half way through Lonely Woman. Smith (who doesn't sing
the common lyrics to the tune) is not as simpatico to
the harmolodic concept as some other singers Ornette
has used, like Mari Okubo and Sylvie Jensen. Instead
of integrating herself into the band's sound, they
adapt to what she is doing. Different, but
fascinating. Turnaroud, which also has vocals, is
performed more straight forward than I've ever heard,
with Falanga plucking a walking bass line, and
MacDowell strumming, sounding almost organ-like."

It's being torrented on Dime. I can't wait to get home
to snag this.

I agree if I do say so myself.
If I could have added Arthur Lee & Love and Joey & the Ramones, Kurt

>From the NY Times on-line:

Van Halen made a ''jump'' into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday
along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes
and Patti Smith.

A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted
at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.

Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van
Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy
Hagar, that put out hits such as ''Jump'' and ''Dreams.''

R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to
mass success in the early 1990s with songs like ''Losing My Religion.''

Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the
song ''The Message'' was like a letter from urban America.

Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round
out the 2007 class.

To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at
least 25 years before nomination.

I just like saying that.

All the Bowery'06 CDs I pledged went out on either Saturday
afternoon or this morning, so expect them soon if you're
expecting them at all. IME, the weed demand was on the light
side vs. previous offers I've personally made - I don't know
if that's because folks were still vacationing last week, or
because far more people are comfortable with/capable of
torrenting than I expected.

Because p2p trading is really not an ultra-safe activity -
particularly the use of certain trackers which have attracted
political attention in the past -- I thought it was important
that the folks who can't/won't do it still have the opportunity
for access.

But enough about me. Direct your thanks and gratitude to the
taping guys with the mysterious handles, and their helper elves,
if you know who they are and where they generally hide. They're
the ones who make it happen, produce first-class stuff,
don't hoard it (a very big deal), and then break a sweat
getting it out quickly.

I'm real happy for Patti and the Patti Smith Group. She deserves the
recognition, and maybe this will give her more monetary benefits in the
future.

But...because of all the political crap surrounding the R'N'R Hall
organization, maybe she shouldn't really care whether she's in or not.
Us fans will ALWAYS care and continue to support her and give her
recognition!

just my opinion,

just wondering - what this will mean exactly soon....will an audio
file such as an mp3 on myspace count? When will they have to address
this issue?

Didn't she also used to do some Ronette's tunes?
"Be My Baby", at least?
(Brain cells are fried, but I kinda remember that one!)

REM and also the Ronettes, one of Patti's faves. But
I can't help wondering about Van Halen, considering
some of the deserving acts that haven't even been on
the ballot so far, like the Moody Blues, who were far
more influential. Is the MC5 in there? I mean, Van
Halen are talented, but Hall of Fame??? I saw them
two years before their first album and again several
years later, and apparently don't get it.

David,

You just asked a question that I was referring to in my earlier post.
There's always some political or dumb reason why certain groups/artists
are chosen over others.
Many of us would agree...why not a band more deserving than Van
Halen??!!!
It's about things that don't often relate to true talent. And please
don't start a flame war, I'm not saying the band members don't have
talent.
But I would prefer many others chosen first!

Jeff

R.E.M. Thrilled To Join Patti Smith In Rock Hall

Michael Stipe

January 08, 2007, 2:05 PM ET

Gary Graff, Detroit

R.E.M.'s joy at being named a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2007 inductee
is made all the more special because the group itself is "wretched" at
being retrospective, according to frontman Michael Stipe.

"Our strength seems to be looking forward...(to) the next song or the
next record or the next video and the next tour and trying to continue
doing good and sometimes great work," Stipe told Billboard.com from
London, where he, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and manager Bertis Downs were
meeting to talk about plans for R.E.M.'s next album. "So it's really an
honor that someone took the time to look backward and to kind of
recognize what we've done in our past, 'cause we're really crappy at
it."

Stipe and Mills both said that R.E.M. was particularly pleased to be in
the same class of inductees as Patti Smith, an acknowledged influence on
the band who called Stipe today (Jan. 8) to congratulate the band on the
Hall of Fame news. "It was really greater to be able to say
'Congratulations to you' back to her," Stipe says. Mills added that,
"She's been up (for induction) before and hasn't gotten in. I was afraid
that her lack of huge record sales might blind people to her influence."

Stipe and Mills said original drummer Bill Berry, who left R.E.M. in
1997, will be attending the March 12 Hall of Fame ceremony in New York,
but the group hasn't decided what songs it will play and who will induct
it.

The group was also inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in
September, where it reunited with Berry and also backed fellow inductee
Gregg Allman. At that time, Stipe, Buck, Mills and Berry hit the studio
to record a John Lennon cover for a Darfur benefit album, but group
members were tight-lipped about when the cut will see the light of day.

Stipe did say R.E.M. plans to hit the studio at the end of the month to
"bash out some demos" of eight songs Mills and Buck have written, which
he's currently putting lyrics to. The trio is also considering "I'm
Gonna DJ," an unreleased song from the sessions for 2004's "Around the
Sun" that they played last night in Oxford, England, with Robyn
Hitchcock and the Venus 3, which features Buck and R.E.M. drummer Bill
Rieflin.

"The songs that we're working on now will probably be at least some of
the songs on the record," Mills says. "We're just basically gearing up
for the whole thing."

Stipe adds that he's "excited about whatever direction we're gonna take.
I can't really tell you what it's going to sound like, but I'm expecting
it will sound like R.E.M. in 2007 -- whatever that is."

I think it's pretty cool she is going in with the Ronettes and Grandmaster
Flash and R.E.M. - I can't tell from the press release -is it Patti only, or
the band as well?
