Almost 40 years ago today, in NEW HAVEN, Conn. on December 9, 1967 a famous singer became one of the first rock stars to be arrested onstage.

James Douglas Morrison had just turned 24. A nice mugshot of Mr. Morrison and the whole story of that memorable evening can be found here:

  http://www.jonhs.com/mugshots/morrison.htm

Patti has also placed a mugshot of Morrison on her website, along with the uncensored version of her notes for AN AMERICAN PRAYER in memory of Jim Morrison's birthday.

The version of the notes that Patti published in EARLY WORK was for some unknown reason changed by her, so it's nice to have the fuller version.

For example: his cock is caught in the mouth of the wilderness

  in the sanitized version.

Hello all

I uploaded Patti's 1972 reading of 'Death by Water', adding it to some other bootleg sourced readings I shared a while ago with the LiveJournal Patti group. If anybody has any queries feel free to contact me...

60th birthday at the bowery poetry club (the one that's right across the
street from what used to be CBGB's). patti has blessed this event, but hasn't
confirmed yet whether or not she will be there. the show is on 12/28 (somebody
told me that might be lenny's birthday -- does anyone know?).

we've already
got a few things lined up, and i'm waiting to hear back from some other folks,
but as this is only a couple of weeks away i need to get into high gear and
make something special for the night.

does anyone have any suggestion on
NYC-area artists that patti likes, or is friends with, or whose work she
admires, etc? (janet hamill is out of town that week, so that's one down.)
bob, the owner of the club, has invited a couple of very high-profile people
who haven't yet rsvp'd. if they are able to come it would help shape the night
quite a bit (ani difranco doing patti covers? can you imagine?) but i can't
wait for confirmation from them before i start setting this up.

help? HELP!

There is a new exhibition of polaroid photographs by Patti Smith at
the Trolley Gallery in London, running until 7 January 2007. The
gallery is in Shoreditch - 73a Redchurch Road, London E2 7DJ - open
Tuesday to Saturday, 12.00-6.00 pm.

The exhibition is called "Sur les traces" and comprises 28
photographs. Apart from one from 1969 and two from 1973, most of the
pictures are recent and several have not been exhibited before. A
visit is highly recommended if you are in London over the next few
weeks.

Most of the photographs are for sale - to raise funds for the
publication of a book of photographs of Lebanon by Paolo Pellegrin.
It is hoped that the book will appear next Spring. Included in the
text will be the words of Patti Smith's song Qana, and a recording of
the song will also be inserted in each copy.

Kind regards

Andrew

OK, thanks to the generosity of Dave and Rhonda, and others before
them, it's my turn to offer 3 copies of the final CBGBs show.
I have 3 copies of the triple cd set, without artwork, ready to mail
out. If you can make more copies and spread them...great...but I'll
also send these to those who are burnerless.

Email me privately with your name and mailing address.

Thanks,
Jeff in California

This site is dedicated to the artists, designers and musicians who
create amazing gig posters to advertise shows and events. The art of
gig posters, flyers, and handbills showcases the talent of many
designers who see little to no profit for creating gig posters. I am
pleased to host this site for the world to see all of the amazing art
and dedication to promote the music scene.

There is a brief item by Patti Smith in the current issue of the New
Stateman (18 December 2006). It is just a quote from her recent
William Blake Society lecture, in the middle of a long article about
Blake by Philip Pullman. You can also find it online here:

Cat Stevens Returns, Explains Himself
Wednesday, December 20, 2006
By Roger Friedman
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,237698,00.html

Cat Stevens is back. Well, his name now is Yusuf Islam, and we'll call
him that, but old habits are hard to break, and you know, he was our
Cat for a long, long time.

Last night he returned to the U.S. and the stage, playing a nice long
set at the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center for invited guests
including rocker Patti Smith and a heavy mix of folks from the media
like New York Times pop critic Jon Pareles, filmmaker Albert Maysles,
rock impresario David Spero and writer Daphne Merkin.

The show, taped for KCRW-FM, was interspersed with a conversation with
that radio station's Nic Harcourt. [snip]

Broadcast and Webcast Exclusive:
First Live US Performance in Three Decades by Yusuf (formerly Cat Stevens)
Will Air on KCRWs Morning Becomes Eclectic
http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/mb/mb061221yusuf

On Thursday, December 21, 2006, at 11:15 am, Music Director Nic
Harcourt host of the influential music program, Morning Becomes
Eclectic on trendsetting public radio station 89.9FM KCRW/Santa Monica
and KCRW.com presents a broadcast and webcast exclusive: the first
live US performance in nearly three decades by singer/songwriter
Yusuf, formerly known as Cat Stevens.

In November 2006, Ya/Atlantic released AN OTHER CUP, Yusuf's
long-anticipated new album, the first collection of modern pop songs
in 28 years from this legendary British singer/songwriter. It was
received with a flurry of critical acclaim and coincided with the 40th
anniversary of Cat Stevens' first hit record, "I Love My Dog."

The performance that will air on Morning Becomes Eclectic was recorded
on December 19 at an invitation-only event in an intimate performance
venue in New York City, hosted by KCRWs Nic Harcourt. The performance
and interview will be broadcast on air and will be simulcast online at
www.KCRW.com on Thurs., Dec. 21, at 11:15 am Pacific time; click on
KCRWLive to listen to the station's on-air stream. Yusuf's performance
will be available for later listening in the KCRW Archives online.

I listened to this and totally enjoyed it. But one thing:
he talks about creating art that will last a long time.
I would have liked to ask him about the statues of the Buddhas,
carved in the mountainsides in Afghanistan. The Muslim Taliban
blew up these works of art that had been there for more than
1000 years. I would have liked to ask what he thinks of that act.
But other than that it was really nice to hear him, his thoughts
and his music.

I guess that's like bush gives "public speeches" only to very carefully

Well.

Patti appearing voluntarily with the pig Y. Islam makes me sick. It makes
me want to say the hell with you, Patti Smith. Shame!

I didn't say he's an insane fundamentalist, I just said I would like to
ask him what he thinks of those actions. I didn't mean to say something
bad about all Muslims.

Sky,

All of your points are very true, but YI (I like that :) ) has made it
clear in the past that his views on many issues are skewed very far from mine,
beginning with women's rights and America's Constitution. Thanks for making
me try to be clearer.
And no, I don't hold Islam in general as a bad thing. Hey, all organized
religions have their seriously not-helpful people, ya know? Actually I should
say that all GROUPS of any kind probably do. Hey, we are all only human
beans.

FWIW, I also have Gregg Allman on my shitlist, for turning people who
thought they were his FRIENDS to the cops, to save his own ass from drug
charges. But that's ok, I haven't thought the Allman Brothers' Band was so
hot since Duane died, and certainly since Barry Oakley died.
See? I can hold a grudge against people I'll never meet for a long time
;)

--Bob

whoa. Mitchell didn't say, and I don't know, if YI/CS supports insane
fundamentalist actions. does he? please tell us you're not calling
YI/CS a pig solely for being Muslim. I'm just asking, I haven't looked
into what YI/CS's trip is. I personally don't have a religious
affiliation, but having one doesn't mean one is among the insane
  fundamentalists.

Bob,
Thanks for the very helpful information; I was ignorant of YI's
beliefs. Hearing that Mr. Peace Train has troubling views of women's
rights disappoints me profoundly, as I wholeheartedly embrace absolute
equality. I should probably leave it at that, but I'll add that the
whole beekeeper suit trip doesn't seem evolved to me relative to more
progressive gender roles; so I couldn't complain if you meant "pig" as
in "sexist pig"; I can imagine Patti calling him that. And I imagine
we agree that the subset of fundamentalists on all sides who also
embrace violence, and warmonger, even further darken our skies.

The new NY Review of Books (issue date January 11, 2007)
has a photo by Annie Leibovitz on the cover - of ... Patti!

Well, Patti and her 2 kids. I don't think it's new to the
world or anything - her daughter is holding a cat, standing
by a piano, and her son is lying on the bed with a guitar.

Looks 1996-ish.

Inside, Joyce Carol Oates reviews Leibovitz' new $75
book and current show at the Brooklyn Museum, running
until January 21, 2007.

I do recall Mr. Stevens calling for the killing (a fatwa by some

We'll in the recent press I found and skimmed through it did seem
people were kinda avoiding asking him about that (or at least sidestep
around it), and when they did - he seemed to try to dismiss it:

[snip] Still, he's sorry about the Rushdie business.

"It was 17 years ago," he said, shaking his head. [snip]

although somewhat soothed yesterday by the interview w/ Yusuf, it has
pretty much been undone by the tone in the thread I started. I wish I
knew where all this moral certainty comes from....

Especially when seeing something like this:

Today's Review From Esquire

The Enemy at Home: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11
by Dinesh D'souza

Death to America
	A review by Mark Warren

Dear Dinesh,

Just read your new book, The Enemy at Home: The Cultural Left and Its
Responsibility for 9/11. Here's your blurb -- I think it works:
"Dinesh D'Souza does for liberals what The Protocols of the Elders of
Zion did for the Jews!" Put that one up high, D, because with your
crowd, that's going to move some serious books. And you're going to
need the help, my friend, what with being hospitalized for what would
have been your book tour. Come on, Dinesh, let's fight.

That you have provoked violence from a lowly American such as myself
(read: one lacking the sinecure of an endowed chair at the Hoover
Institution, whatever that may be) should not come as a surprise to
you, old girl, when you say in your spicy little tract that "without
the cultural left" -- again, whatever that is -- "9/11 would not have
happened," and that if only we had been more like the "traditional
culture" maniacs who attacked us -- if only we stoned homosexuals to
death, for instance, or enslaved our women, and didn't brook so much
dissent or speak so freely or have so much sex -- then maybe we
wouldn't have provoked their violence. Yessir, in the course of your
tortured logic, in this utterly incoherent book, you do end up
justifying their violence against our open society, an open society
that you seem clearly to despise.

Here's the thing, D: We knew how much they hated America. We just
didn't have a full grasp, until now, of how much you and your crazy
cohort hate America. Because you have taken to heart the "Islamic
critique of Western moral depravity," as you call it, and have come
down on their side of things. You actually seek to blame your
free-speaking moral inferiors here in America for giving bin Laden no
choice but to kill us. And in nothing short of derangement, you
imagine a "de facto alliance" between the American "cultural left" and
Islamic fundamentalism. You blame Michael Moore, for instance, for
establishing the atmosphere that made 9/11 possible. But Dinesh, every
good foot soldier of the cultural left knows that Michael Moore wasn't
really made el jefe of the movement until the release of Fahrenheit
9/11 in 2004, which was, you know, after 9/11. So what cues was bin
Laden taking from Michael Moore? His caustic view of corporate
detachment in Roger & Me? His zany John Candy vehicle Canadian Bacon?
Are you crazy? Or are you just looking for a little of that Coulter
cash?

Your unbearably prim, dishonest little book searches for culpability
for 9/11 everywhere except where it actually lies. In 1998, bin Laden
himself told American journalist John Miller that it was the American
military presence on the Arabian Peninsula that was driving him
batshit crazy and that he intended to do something about it. Something
specific. He told Miller he was going to "bring the fight to America"
("Greetings, America. My Name Is Osama bin Laden," Esquire, February
1999). But there you sit at the Hoover Institution, looking for the
bogeyman. I've got news for you, D. As President Bush says, We're
right, they're wrong.

Dinesh, my wife and I live in Manhattan. This is our home. This is
where we are raising our children. We were here on September 11, 2001.
We had the taste of ash in our mouths, and we were so angry, we wanted
to kill somebody. The enemy felt close at hand that day. Today, after
reading your despicable book, the enemy again feels close at hand. And
the enemy is you.

So come on, Dinesh, don't just stand there on the mass grave in lower
Manhattan and spew your astringent hate at your own countrymen and
-women. Defend your ideas with your blood. To be clear: Let's fight.
You know where to find me. I'm in the book.

Not sure what it being 17 years ago has to do with anything. Will Michael
Richards' (Kramer) racist rantings be okay in 17 years? I think not. It's
whether or not CS/YI still agrees with his own statement now. xxo- Seena

Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam has *never* either (1) unequivocally
repudiated his remarks about the fatwa, or (2) apologized directly to
Salman Rushdie. Instead, over the last decade and a half, he has
given out some mealy-mouthed evasions and obfuscations.

Some quotes:

"[If Rushdie turned up at my doorstep looking for help,] I might ring
somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like. I'd try
to phone the Ayatollah Khomeini and tell him exactly where this man is."

"In Islam there is a line between let's say freedom and the line
which is then transgressed into immorality and irresponsibility and I
think as far as this writer is concerned, unfortunately, he has been
irresponsible with his freedom of speech. Salman Rushdie or indeed
any writer who abuses the prophet, or indeed any prophet, under
Islamic law, the sentence for that is actually death. It's got to be
seen as a deterrent, so that other people should not commit the same
mistake again."

I can't see supporting, hanging out with, etc., an artist who joined
a call for the death of a fellow artist for exercising free speech,
especially based on a bunch of wacko religious fundamentalist
bullshit. Fuck him.
