The exhibition is impressive, a lot more work than i expected. Patti's work is very interesting but my fingers are cold so typing is not easy right now. JOhn Smith gave a nice introduction to the work encouraging people on the guided tour to join in (fair play to those who did, it was very interesting listening to you all talk). I had a ticket to the public interview today but decided not to go (how torn i was) as i have a big day tomorrow and needed to get back to Dublin to prepare.
The gig at the gallery was good. I was one of the first to arrive at the gallery, but in the space of time it took me to go to the toilet a queue formed and my seat was not as close to the stage as i had wanted. However, the venue was so small that every seat was great.
When we walked in, there was a grand piano, one accoustic guitar, and two stools on stage. I could hear people speculating; many thought it would be Lenny kaye that would accompany Patti although i did hear some people wonder about Oliver Ray. Maybe the piano was a bit of a giveaway. I don't recall there being too many gigs with just Tony and Patti so this was special . Tony brought a guitar on stage with him. (i may not have hte order of things right)
Patti explained her connectoin with Yeats (having written a paper on him when she was about 18 she promised that one day she would travel to Sligo to see his grace, and now she has;-)
Beneath the SOuthern Cross. Tony and Patti on guitar. There was something a bit out of tune or out of key or something wiht the guitars and Patti seemed apologetic but then realised that it was Tony and not her. She thought this a momentous occasion and said that she couldn't wait to tell the rest of hte band. She said that Tony is always in tune (in fact, she said, he is the only one of them ever in tune and that he tunes everyone elses guitars for them).
They moved into Grateful, with Patti expressing how grateful we all are having known or heard Jerry Garcia.
People Have The Power - spoken
The Jackson Song - Tony on Piano SHe introduced this saying how much Jackson hates it.
Trampin' - Tony on piano. Patti spoke all about Marian Anderson and the Daughters of hte American Revolution and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Mother Rose - Tony on piano. from two great women to another one - "my mother". This was rather lovely.
Peaceable Kingdom - Tony on piano. "I hope you like it"
I'm so lonesome i could cry - Tony and Patti on guitar. They had not planned on playing this song but the music playing before she came on reminded her of this song. She introduced it as "Tony's penance" but having messed up guitar and lyrics a few times she finished the song laughing, saying "that was bad - maybe it was my penance"
My Blakean Year - Both on guitar.
Dancing Barefoot - Tony on guitar. great performance.
Wing - Tony on guitar. Patti introduced this as the song written for Jesse and that she does not hate it.
Because The NIght - Patti encouraged the audience to sing this one with her as Tony played hte piano.
There was some poetry thrown in too; i remember the following were read (but don't know what order or where they fit in):
Wilderness
The geometry blinked ruin unimaginable
Death of a tramp
The writer's song
Don't remember anythng else, but i may have forgotten.
GARRET
