Patti great day in San Francisco

Patti said she had a "great day" in San Francisco, although it began badly, as her supposed 1:00pm appearance on KFOG never happened because when Patti showed up at the studio there was no one there! Incredibly enough this is the second time she has been stood up by KFOG, but as I told Patti when I saw her later at her booksigning, the only song they ever play of hers is Because the Night.

Things improved dramatically when Patti was the featured guest on the Univ of San Francisco's KUSF. The DJ opened the show by playing the new live version of Break it Up, complete with Patti's spoken intro, and Patti came on at around 3:15 and gave an amazing poetry reading. She began by reading Blake's Auguries of Innocence, after the first few lines of the poem were read by Sir Ralph Richardson. She then read in short order:

The Lovecrafter
Sleep of the Dodo
Three Windows
Radondo Beach (sic) - the early poem version
Preface to Elegie
Picasso Laughing
The Geometry Blinked Ruin Unimaginable
The Writer's Song.

Next stop, the Haight-Ashbury, where there was a very intimate crowd of only about 200 people gathered to have Patti and Lenny sign books for twenty minutes before they took to the stage. Lenny began with reading from his book "The Sensual Art of the Croon" and playing appropriate songs, followed by Patti who told long stories before reading several poems from "Auguries of Innocence." She noted this was the first time she had read most of the poems in her new book, but by the end of the day, Patti had debuted over half of the books 26 poems!

Next stop, the Victoria Theater where a mere 40 minutes after finishing signing books in the Haight, Patti stepped out from behind the Theater's red curtain to explain the change of venue: She had booked two shows on the same night after being jet-lagged from her trip to Africa. At the Victoria Patti was in her best stand-up comedy mood, telling long and as she noted sometimes rambling stories, which were nevertheless completely entertaining and very well received by the capacity audience. Patti was obviously very tired, but also was enjoying herself hugely, and seemed to get so caught up in the show she forgot how long she had been onstage! In fact the show lasted about two hours, which was possibly one of the longest poetry readings Patti's ever given. But by the end of the night, when she left the stage to a sustanained standing ovation, Patti was so tired she came back merely to explain she was simply way too tired to do justice to an encore song, and instead wished everyone a
 happy evening.
