Actually it's not the whole country anymore that locks people up for long periods of time for possession of pot. It's on a state by state basis and by how much you get caught holding. Like Michigan has basically a zero tolerance policy but in other states it's basically a fine. It's better not to over generalize.

Actually, people in your country are still receiving multi-year and even
decade-plus prison sentences for possession of pot.
