TVShowsOnDVD has an item about the upcoming dvd's from
  The Tomorrow Show:

  >> This three disc set includes performances and
interviews with Elvis Costello & The Attractions, The
Ramones, Iggy Pop, The Jam, Plasmatics and Split Enz.
The DVD set also includes interview segments with Paul
Weller, Joan Jett, Patti Smith, and an unforgettable
  appearance by John Lydon. <<

No mention of U2 -- the article does talk about some
of the problems with rights to musical performances.
I seem to recall that their first US tv appearance was
with Tom Snyder, in like 1981...

Pete Fornatale just interviewed Patti and Lenny re: Dylan on PBS during the
break on the repeat of No Direction Home! He's going to speak to them again
at the end of part 2, in about an hour and a half or so New York time. I
think this interview will be on all over the country at some point. xxo- Seena

Uhm, yeah, okay. She already posted that.

But there's a thing or two people might want to know about
this U2 tour that hasn't been posted already. So here goes:

* The "day of show" ticket drops on TicketMaster.com
actually start out late the night before on this tour...
This is unusual, but neat nonetheless.

* On these U2 shows, the arena floors are all general admission,
and are the lowest price in the house (usually $50 to $54).
  Seats  on much of the "lower level" go for $160/$169 and $99;
seats in the middle/upper tiers go from $50 to $99.

* Back on the floor, there is a privileged ellipse of folks
closest to the stage. They get wristbands for re-entry and
they are not crushed to death. But you don't gain entry
into that ellipse by waiting in line all day; your destiny
is decided the day you procure your ticket, since folks
waiting for floor access outside these arenas have their
tickets scanned by a guy with a laptop when they walk
through the door, and you're either in or out of the
ellipse based on that computer's decision.

* (For U2/Bono bashers only)
  You dislike U2.
You wouldn't go to these shows if someone paid you.
You get two guesses as to whether I give a fuck.

hi!

anybody out there who wants to play in a movie with patti smith?
you should be an actor/actress. but its even worse: you should make your appointment to the upcoming casting till tomorrow, 1 pm in the theatre of windhoek. this is in africa. and the script seems to be weird. but who cares.

are there any african fans around? good luck to you!

birgit

details below

aus az namibia:
Casting f|r Schlingensief

I do believe she was watching it at the time--it wasn't announced, nor did I
see it over here on the W Coast. Purely a 'run to the computer and get it

I was just at the Bowery Ballroom website (www.boweryballroom.com) and they finally have their December schedule up but there's no listing for Patti to play her uusal birthday and New Years Eve show. I'm just wondering if there's been any scuttle butt in NYC about any rumors about if she's performing again this year or not. I'm trying to see if I can swing another trip out there this year. I figure it's going to be the last weekend New Years Eve for a while so I'd like to catch her if I can.

Thanks,

Keith

I think it was only on the E Coast or even just in NY.
I'm out here in Seattle, watched it twice--no Patti or Lenny here! Lucky
NYers!

they were on for literally 90 seconds making remarks to support the public

lenny, patti was all smiles as usual. jack thecat.

I just got a copy of Patti's new book AUGURIES OF
INNOCENCE, and it looks to be quite a beautiful
collection of poems. Of the the 26 poems it contains,
I'm only aware of two which Patti has recited before,
which are WRITTEN BY A LAKE and THREE WINDOWS. Here
are the titles of the 26 poems:

The Lovecrafter
Worthy the Lamb Slain For Us
Sleep of the Dodo
The Long Road
A Pythagorean Traveler
Desert Chorus
Written by a Lake
The Oracle
The Setting and the Stone
The Mast Is Down
The Blue Doll
Eve of All Saints
She Lay in the Stream Dreaming of August Sander
Fourteen
Birds of Iraq
To His Daughther
The Pride Moves Slowly
The Leaves Are Late Falling
Wilderness
The Geometry Blinked Ruin Unimaginable
Feromenico
Three Windows
Our Jargon Muffles the Drum
Death of a Ramp
Mummer Love
The Writer's Song

Here is the text of WRITTEN BY THE LAKE, as Patti
first performed it in March, 1996 at the Warfield
Theater, in San Francisco with Oliver Ray on solo
guitar. This version differs significantly in several
areas from the new version Patti has included in
AUGURIES OF INNOCENCE.

WRITTEN BY A LAKE

New years day. Rain. Two white candles illuminate the
room. This is where they sleep. He writes. She
confesses. this is where she weeps. She is the cause
of the rain. She would not stop weeping. and the sky
obliged to follow, did.

(How is that mapped out? What is the refrain? Why must
the sky follow?) Is the heart hollow? Sinking in the
center of a bottomless lake. And I with time as her
lashes. Pretty vain pool. The heart plunges merrily.
It is deceptive. How light it appears. Yet in truth
how weighty a thing. This powerful stone carved in the
shape of an organ with chambers pumping. How slick a
shadow it leaks as its signature. Sticky, ox-blood,
the color of new shoes. High topped, golden-laced and
worn with such expectations as to ride out life on
horseback. Racing from hill to hill with humor,
horror, bits of English, Spanish stitched in sleeves.

Look you radiant wash yard. The sheets billow. The wet
folds tell these stories. Once there was a girl who
walked straight, but she was truly lame. She walked
upright in new boots, yet I tell you her feet were
bare. She walked and she lived forever. Yet there she
is, buried in a vault of fertile air.

And if he, slipping at last should rest his head
against the glass, releasing beads of warm spittle
from his sleeping mouth, parting as if to speak. And
if she, shaken from her torpor, should rise to write,
what would she write? It is nothing. These fragments.
Soft as ash our nothing, size for want of blood, for
here, blood is composed of sorrow. A wound is the
temple.

Your fingers press the door well, naked, triggering a
spring exposing the hard corner from where you walk.
Had you stumbled, offering a palm, encasing rivets,
extracted from the wet pallet. This time or that. Had
you pricked the hours hand. One would have said with
nothing but eyes. Think nothing of it, for what
remains to flush is nothing save salt jamming the
mechanism of formal delights, former misery, nothing
save salt to form in a mound. A bundle to fling over a
shoulder. And would you be bitter? Or would you think
nothing of it? And some years later would you toss
rivets like dice across a board of dampness and grass?
And would sit upon a ledge of stones circling a low
glowing body unfastening the dressings of a gone
burden, the cremation of all my sorrow, spread the
grains with your fingers and without thought brush
them aside from a board of glass, thus free to drown
in sorrows of your own. Immerse yourself in a
stillness flanked by translucent hills, one a mound
that serves the people as a mountaincoated,
immaculate wreathed at the throat with beads of cloud.
These things were written by the lake.

Do not grip a sword, nor draw what might be drawn for
wisdom is a dying bird, encased in a palm. A roving
eye nestled in a cheek, pure as yourself, next to
nothing.

These things were written by the lake. That is to say
before existence as existence was scripted and dealt a
pack of lies. Each with a winning face, each with this
blushing command. Prick this, this moment the hand is
free, wrapped in a fragment of cloth, the cremation of
all our sorrows, lucid as the knots about a neck,
caressed by a sun, stiffened by a wind, and let go.

Patti opens her new book with this quote from William
Blake:

A skylark wounded in the wing,
A cherubim does cease to sing.

Patti's book is undoubtedly a masterpiece of poetic
writing, as this opening poem on yet another Johnny
(who also likes to spread his seeds) attests to:

I saw you who was myself
slightly stooped whistling mouth
with leather sack and breeches brown
striding the naked countryside

with summer bones long and dry
into the breath of our glad day
the long afternoon the longer night
whence you trod bareheaded bright

I saw you reap among
stirring the fires of the ancient ones
the body leaped red with mist
scarred with sticks the pome and haw
and the nectar as their ink

I saw you walk the length of fields
as far as the finger of providence
as far as the mounds that we call hills
and ranges cut from the heart of slate

I saw you dip into your sack
scattering seeds for another day
as the woodman hews his way
through oak and ash variant pine

for writing desks that shall reflect
words penned that speak of trees
felled for sheets bound unbound
vellum foolscap all sober hopes
require within all drunkeness
where the sacred swims

I saw you walk who was myself
I saw the book upon the shelf
I saw the empty sack at last
I saw the fruits of labor vast
I saw the branch your shadow cast

AUGURIES OF INNOCENCE

By WILLIAM BLAKE

To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.
A robin redbreast in a cage
Puts all heaven in a rage.
A dove-house filled with doves and pigeons
Shudders hell through all its regions.
A dog starved at his master's gate
Predicts the ruin of the state.
A horse misused upon the road
Calls to heaven for human blood.
Each outcry of the hunted hare
A fibre from the brain does tear.
A skylark wounded in the wing,
A cherubim does cease to sing.
The game-cock clipped and armed for fight
Does the rising sun affright.
Every wolf's and lion's howl
Raises from hell a human soul.
The wild deer wandering here and there
Keeps the human soul from care.
The lamb misused breeds public strife,
And yet forgives the butcher's knife.
He who shall hurt the little wren
Shall never be beloved by men.
He who the ox to wrath has moved
Shall never be by woman loved.
The wanton boy that kills the fly
Shall feel the spider's enmity.
He who torments the chafer's sprite
Weaves a bower in endless night.
The caterpillar on the leaf
Repeats to thee thy mother's grief.
Kill not the moth nor butterfly,
For the Last Judgment draweth nigh.
He who shall train the horse to war
Shall never pass the polar bar.
The beggar's dog and widow's cat,
Feed them, and thou wilt grow fat.
The bat that flits at close of eve
Has left the brain that won't believe.
The owl that calls upon the night
Speaks the unbeliever's fright.
The gnat that sings his summer's song
Poison gets from Slander's tongue.
The poison of the snake and newt
Is the sweat of Envy's foot.
The poison of the honey-bee
Is the artist's jealousy.
A truth that's told with bad intent
Beats all the lies you can invent.
Joy and woe are woven fine,
A clothing for the soul divine.
Under every grief and pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.
It is right it should be so:
Man was made for joy and woe;
And when this we rightly know
Through the world we safely go.
The babe is more than swaddling bands,
Throughout all these human lands;
Tools were made and born were hands,
Every farmer understands.
Every tear from every eye
Becomes a babe in eternity;
This is caught by females bright
And returned to its own delight.
The bleat, the bark, bellow, and roar
Are waves that beat on heaven's shore.
The babe that weeps the rod beneath
Writes Revenge! in realms of death.
He who mocks the infant's faith
Shall be mocked in age and death.
He who shall teach the child to doubt
The rotting grave shall ne'er get out.
He who respects the infant's faith
Triumphs over hell and death.
The child's toys and the old man's reasons
Are the fruits of the two seasons.
The questioner who sits so sly
Shall never know how to reply.
He who replies to words of doubt
Doth put the light of knowledge out.
A riddle or the cricket's cry
Is to doubt a fit reply.
The emmet's inch and eagle's mile
Make lame philosophy to smile.
He who doubts from what he sees
Will ne'er believe, do what you please.
If the sun and moon should doubt,
They'd immediately go out.
The prince's robes and beggar's rags
Are toadstools on the miser's bags.
The beggar's rags fluttering in air
Does to rags the heavens tear.
The poor man's farthing is worth more
Than all the gold on Afric's shore.
One mite wrung from the labourer's hands
Shall buy and sell the miser's lands,
Or if protected from on high
Does that whole nation sell and buy.
The soldier armed with sword and gun
Palsied strikes the summer's sun.
The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caesar's laurel crown.
Nought can deform the human race
Like to the armour's iron brace.
When gold and gems adorn the plough
To peaceful arts shall Envy bow.
To be in a passion you good may do,
But no good if a passion is in you.
The whore and gambler, by the state
Licensed, build that nation's fate.
The harlot's cry from street to street
Shall weave old England's winding sheet.
The winner's shout, the loser's curse,
Dance before dead England's hearse.
Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born.
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.
Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.
We are led to believe a lie
When we see not through the eye
Which was born in a night to perish in a night,
When the soul slept in beams of light.
God appears, and God is light
To those poor souls who dwell in night,
But does a human form display
To those who dwell in realms of day.

Hi all, I've been a long-time member/reader and inviting you to look at my
early punk pix. Patti called me "The Girl with the Camera Eye" from LA's
Roxy stage, 1976.
jennylens.net/merch: 175 archival photos for sale! LA, NY and Brit bands and
fans (1976-1980). No money, no wall space, no problem! Enjoy them. Bigger
than at jennylens.net, my archive site w/pix and long stories. Please
forward my links and this email!

LA City Beat column devoted/dedicated totally to my work at
http://lacitybeat.com/article.php?id=2700&IssueNum=122 ("The Girl with the
Camera Eye," October 6, 2005). MY Patti shot accompanies Mick Farren
article.

Working w/custom lab, printing archival silver gelatin, traditional darkroom
photos and hand-signed.

Please tell performers, producers, documentarians, authors, designers, your
neighbors, your co-workers, soccer mothers, lawyers, students, etc.

Constantly surprised all the telephone operators, clerical workers, retail
personnel, technical support w/whom I deal with on business levels are into
my photos, but they don't know they are MY photos or how to find me. And
they help me do what I'm doing!

Exhibiting photos at group shows. Turning down one-woman shows until I can
raise funds or find corporate sponsorship. Any ideas? Write me!

Several book proposals in the pipeline PLUS collaborations with well-known
artists AND more press coverage.

Can't do it alone: need equipment, people power and money to respond to ALL
the serious interest in my archive.

Please spread the word. Can ONLY continue this work by selling and licensing
my prints. Need grants and major support. This archive needs to be preserved
and shared, or we lose a vital part of our cultural history.

I have shots of Patti w/Sparks, backstage at the Santa Monica Civic
Auditorium and on stage w/Arthur Lee and color shots of her and Jim Carroll
on stage. James Williamson, formerly w/Iggy, at her show. Tons on and off
stage, but I need money and equipment to scan, post, preserve and share
these. ALL 1976-78.

Had no idea what/who were in my files. Seymour Stein, who started Sire and
signed the Ramones. Found him at the Weirdos, Slash magazine benefit show,
Larchmont Hall, July 8, 1977. The Damned and their manager in the audience,
Weirdos, Orpheum, April 16, 1977. My photos confirm long-time stories and
rumors. Who else will turn up? Or as Peter Case, formerly of the Nerves,
told me: "without my photos, their history would be lost."

Why two sites? I initially created my informational site, jennylens.net, in
Dreamweaver, but needed a powerful, professional online store.
jennylens.net/merch is built with ShopSite database software, which has
design limitations. And they both require tons of html hand-coding. Will
they ever be one site? When I have two weeks to do nothing else! Or someone
to help me.

THANK YOU! Spread the word! I've only just begun . . .

To clarify, it now seems that Patti and Lenny will be
appearing solo on the West coast, hence the more
intimate nature of the venues.

However the complete band will be doing a HORSES show
in NYC at BAM, but not at MSG. However, it seem's
likely that Patti and Bono may team up for a duet on
DANCING BAREFOOT at MSG.

PATTI SMITH and LENNY KAYE

November 11 Seattle - Crocodile Cafe
November 14 San Francisco - Great American Music Hall

November 15 West Hollywood - The Troubadour

PATTI AND FULL BAND

November 21 Madison Square Garden (Special Guest:U2)
November 22 Madison Square Garden (Special Guest:U2)

November 30 NYC BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music)
December 1 NYC BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music)

Meanwhile, here's some of Patti's comments which seem
to be appropriate from here appearance on last weeks
PBS special, SONGS OF PROTEST:

PATTI: I grew up in a rural community, relatively
unsophisticated, and I kept in step with the rapidly
changing social and political climate through poets
and musicians. They were wide awake to the events of
our time, and they provided a voice to protest racial
discrimination, nuclear testing, the destruction of
the environment. Confrontational artists like Woody
Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone, Joan Baez, and Phil
Ochs drew us from complacency to consciousness. Music
disseminated truth, and in the mouth of one such as
Bob Dylan, became a weapon of mass instruction.

Our music is family unrelated by blood. As Walt
Whitman might say, it contains multitudes. The purity
of a child in her Sunday-go-to-meeting dress. The
chaotic debauchery of a rock-and-roll stars hotel
room. The emotional and physical release of gospel and
R & B. It is the sound of the hill country,
impoverished and free. It is the transient whistling
through a sad, postindustrial terrain. It is the
internal landscape of John Coltrane. The sensuous
agony of Etta James. It is three cords into hell. Our
music grants us a coat of invulnerability, a spring in
which we bathe with abandon, methods of response,
moments of respite, and a rite of self expression. It
is the porch song. Plunging youth. It is thick- veined
hands squeezing clusters of notes from an equally
thick neck. It is the Les Paul. The tenor sax. It is a
platter spinning in space etched with the words Tutti
Frutti.

It seems weird that Patti and Lenny would be performing alone
and trying to do Horses. A lot of the songs from that album
are rockers that are usually performed with a whole band. The
result might be really unique and intriguing, or might not quite
work out. Or maybe a combination of both :-)

Also I'll be interested to see who is playing in the gigs that
are with band. Now that - what was that guy's name that started
with O - is no longer with the band I wonder if they'll be down
to 4 people, or if a guy with initials TV might pick up a guitar
and join them.

"The possibilities are endless, and for me to miss one, would seem
to be groundless."

OMG this is HILLARIOUS!!!
Thankyou so much for sending this!
My 14yo was by the computer when I opened the link, and he loved it as well--I
can't wait till my almost-11yo comes home, he loves the Abbot & Costello
routine and I'm sure he'll really get a kick out of it as well!

Thankyou so much for this--I needed a good laugh
after a busy morning of running around all over town doing routine doctor
stuff--with a line of seniors queued up to get their flu shots while I waited
an hour and munched on a donut to try and cheer me as I waited, but this
cheered me more than a donut could ever do! :-D

Whoever these folks are who authored this are people I'd like to get to know!
Very creative IMHO and right on the money, literally.

Thanks! (Uh....did I say that already?! ;-) )

XO-Glenna

Patti said in Portland, when asked if she stills plays the clarinet that, in
fact, she would be traveling next to Africa to sit in the desert and play
clarinet for a movie - I maybe way wrong but I seem to recall her saying in
Sudan.

She also said she didn't know much about the movie but was asked and was
getting a trip to Africa in the deal.

Patti Smith is the recipient of the Woman of Valor Lifetime Achievement Award at a dinner in her honor, the kick-off event of the 2nd ROCKRGRL Music Conference 2005, in Seattle, Washington, November 10th. She will also be the keynote speaker at the conference on Friday morning, November 11th.

The focus of the ROCKRGRL Music Conference (an off-shoot of ROCKRGRL Magazine) is to discuss opportunities for women in the music business. There will be two days of panel discussions, a trade show, and more than 200 performances by female artists in all genres from all over the world at night in 20 venues throughout downtown Seattle.

When it came to choosing this year's recipient, Patti was a natural choice. "Patti has always been such a force and inspiration to so many women" said conference founder Carla DeSantis. "We are thrilled to be honoring her contributions."

Other participants in the conference include Saturday keynote speaker Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Bonnie Raitt, Ann Wilson (Heart), Cris Williamson and more.
