There were more, but all in russian, so... sorry.
Some photos from Saint Peterburg:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/feliksd/113001.html
Some unprofessional photos from Moscow:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/_palka/116698.html and

Some professional photos from Moscow (Nadezhda Lebedeva):

Brief Moscow review:
Concert was sheduled on 23:00 (Moscow time), we came at 21:00 and there was
no one in, except Umka (famous local underground singer, similar to Patti:
http://www.umka.ru - especially go to photo and albums sections). I played
with Umka for about 3 years on percussion, so we are good friends. I've got
Early Works and Coral Sea with me and the idea to sign it. Umka told me she
guided Patti to Arbat (local art street) for a half of day - so she may pass
the books to sign. After signing Patti came out and we briefly talked. She
was very tired: time zone difference seemed hard, so she excused and went
back to her room. She told me that she asked for earlier begining, but venue
rejected.
Concert started almost at time, there were more than 600 people, and it was
hard to breathe. Lineup was compact: Patti, Lenny, Tony and Jay Dee (very
imposant in his white jacket). Sometimes Jessie come onstage to play
keyboards, sometimes, when Tony switched to keyboards, the roadie (don't
know his name) played bass. Umka joined on two songs to sing chorus.
I won't write anything about the impression, because I was jumping and
singing and having so good time I, maybe, never experienced on any live
event in my life. "The life well lived" - that's all I can say now.

***
Below is the setlist with some remarks.

25 Floor
Bass cabinet burned Rap (after the first song bass cabinet burned, so it was
briefly replaced, while Patti said: "Errr... we've got some technical
problems... We must have blown out something. But... We don't need no
fucking amps! We're amplifying from within!" - The technical problems
continued some times more, but mostly onstage, sound in auditorium itself
was good and clear)
Redondo Beach
Space Monkey (with Jessie on keyboards)
Oh Great Man (lyrics that I never heard or read, performed by Patti on
acoustic guitar playing E chord and Tony on pedal bass) ->
-> My Blakean Year
Free Money (with roadie on bass)
Ghost Dance (with Umka on vocal and roadie on bass)
Beneath the Southern Cross
Ain't It Strange
We Three
CBGB Rap (Patti: "They always ask me, what was CBGB like. (in different
voices:) "What was CBGB like? What was CBGB like?" In CBGB pauses between
songs could be 15 or 20 minutes: some combo may be burned, some string may
be broken, some guy may stoned...")
Beslan (crying half-improvised song dedicated to Beslan tragedy in
Ingushetia exactly 1 year ago, that killed more than 300 children, Patti
plays clarinet)
Dancing Barefoot (with Jessie on keyboards)
Because the Night (with roadie on bass)
Peaceble Kingdom (dedicated to Luisiana and Mississippi tornado victims) ->
-> Not Fade Away
People Have The Power (with Umka on vocal)

Encore:
(As Patti appeared after 5 or 6 minutes of constant applause, some guy broke
close to stage with album covers to sign.
- Where are you from? - Patti asked.
- Moscow!
- Moscow... Hmm... Well, I guess I have nothing else to do right now! (to
audience:) You know, you're all gonna have to wait! Because... my mother
always told me... never to say "no"... to an idiot.
Everybody laughed, except for the guy who haven't understand a word, ahd a
bunch of others, who started THEIR run for autograph. As they jumped and
waved their hands, Patti said: "Nope. Only one idiot per city".)

Like a Rolling Stone ->
-> Rock N Roll Nigger (Some young drunk with collar below his chest tried to
jump onstage to do the stagediving. The guards immediately threw him
offstage. Patti, remembering her own fall, came close to the ramp, find him
in the audience and drag onstage again, where he danced wildly for a minute
and stagedived head-forward on the concrete floor.) ->
-> Gloria (Between RR Nigger and Gloria Patti rapped about "We don't need no
fucking security, just be united and no security would be needed, no
cameras, no metal detectors, no nothing, just help your brother. We are
free!")
***

What a great!

Background Information on CBGB Eviction
Even after the Manhattan Courts ruled that CBGB was not in the wrong about
incorrectly billed rent increases and should not be evicted, CBGB was served
with eviction papers from their landlord, a homeless organization, the Bowery
Residents Committee.
To Date, CBGB Has:
-- Agreed to pay significant rent increases
-- Obtained Certificate of Occupancy for the entire building
-- Secured two separate third-party guarantors
-- Agreed to provide a substantial security deposit
-- Agreed to contribute $97,500 (the amount of the disputed rent arrears
plus interest) in good faith to the BRC upon receiving a new lease, even though
the Manhattan courts ruled that CBGB did not owe any money to the BRC
-- Guaranteed to raise the BRC additional funds in good faith through
fundraising efforts, with a target of $100,000!

Nice, thanks for passing that on too. We can't do attachments to the best of my knowledge but a friend sent me a screen cap from either CNN or Fox News. It's got a photo of GW at a press conference and it's quoting him but it looks like it says "Bush the worst disaster to hit the USA" I laughed!!!!! I'll try to see if I can find out where it came from.

Keith

Has anyone else given thought to the idea that CBGB's doesn't have to be
saved? That maybe even having it pass into but a memory is not a bad thing?

Recently walking thru Soho I spotted a couple across the street from Rocks
in Your Head (hey, Bob) and the guy was carrying a slick black shopping bag
with the CBGB logo in silver. Ugh. It ocurred to me CB's as I know it is
already gone.

And I went to the save CBGB auction on ebay and the first thing I saw listed
was a "girly tee" signed by Tommy Lee. Double ugh.

Lisa- I understand what you're saying. On the other hand, NYC is becoming a
gentrified sea of Starbuck's, CVS's, etc. It isn't only CBGB's itself, which
is a legendary place, it's the idea of keeping the uniqueness and
originality in this city, which is slowly going the way of high rents and bland upscale
boutiques and corporate stores. Another pair of designer shoes, anyone? I
understand about the shopping bag with the CBGB's logo being a little bit
creepy or whatever, but the only way for CB's to generate funds to help them in
their legal fight is to sell stuff. I bought a CBGB's shirt and sweartshirt
on their web site. Tommy Lee may be a jerk, but if he wants to help, why not?
NYC used to be a place where young artists of every genre could come, get a
cheap apartment, explore the city and their art relatively cheaply. Now
they're lucky if they can get a share with three other people. I realize that in
life everything must change, but it's hard to sit still and watch your city
mutate into blandness. xxo- Seena

Incorrect as it may sound, it might be true. One risk of CBGB's continuing
is that it becomes something much less than it used to be. At least right
now what people will remember of CBGB is one of the finest moments/eras in
rock history. That's unlikely to be recreated there, don't you think?

On the one hand, I'm distressed that this has become such a vendetta that
even after CBGB offered to pay back rent and do fundraising, the landlords
still want them out. On the other hand, providing services to the homeless
is a pretty essential service, and if that's what will happen with the
space, its far different than seeing it turned into another Starbucks.

I think the agency CBGB's pays rent to already does that, and many feel that
because of the skyrocketing real estate market, they're just going to sell
it to get the money. I don't know if CB's is "less than it used to be". There
are plenty of young bands out there that we haven't heard of, perhaps, who
are just starting out, who want a place to play, along with the older acts
that come back from time to time. It's the young kids who create the rock
history, and I'm sure they have their own groups that they worship right now,
playing at CBGB's, just like some of us did with Patti, Television, Ramones, etc.
back then. xxo- Seena

I think CBGB's has passed into history, it was what it was....its not what
it was.....its an icon, its a designer handbag...bands play there,...the
toilets are still shitty....I'd like to see a plaque somewhere over some
newer club that is still less commercial than most...Bowery Ballroom??? or
some plaque inside, or a street sign outside in honor of CBGB's like Joey
got....CB's got behind in the rent....possession is 9/10's of the law but
not when the landlord comes calling, the late fees and surcharges in dispute
are beside the point, NYU and the big cohones will do what they want...if
Hilly had kept up on the rent he might have more sympathy....It was a great
wonderful place in the 70's, we've got our videos and our memories......Now
we need a landmark preservation sign that here stood CBGB's.....and move
on....jackthecat.

According to what I've read, the Bowery Residents Committee (BRC) doesn't
actually own the building, so they can't sell it. They have the master
lease on it, and CBGB is a sub-lessee. Either BRC intends to expand into
the CBGB area (they already run a 24-hour drop-in center and other services
upstairs, and I think also run a residential hotel there), or they will rent
it out to someone who can pay more rent and generate more revenue for the
organization...maybe that will be a Starbuck's, I don't know.

I took a look at their website, and BRC is a pretty well established
nonprofit that provides emergency shelter, permanent housing and service
programs to homeless people, especially those with substance abuse and
mental illness. In my offline life, I work with these kinds of programs and
organizations, but I'm on the other coast, so I don't know anything about
BRC in particular. Their board of directors is made up mostly of folks from
corporations, banks, etc. That's not uncommon...most likely they use those
connections for fundraising and to provide business expertise to the
nonprofit. They certainly have plenty of corporate and foundation donors,
but with government programs going down the tubes, that's how these
organizations stay alive. Its not the only model -- there are plenty of
similar groups that are far more community-based and have a quite different
composition on their board. Its hard to tell from just that whether they
are doing a good job or not. The range of programs and housing that they
run is pretty comprehensive and matches what's known in the homeless
services world as a "continuum of care" model that goes from outreach and
services to sheler, transitional housing and evenually permanent housing.

I have no idea whether they are a good organization; no idea how well paid
their director and staff are (although typically such groups don't pay huge
salaries); no idea how they relate to other organizations doing similar
work. The fact that they have a $30 million budget doesn't tell you too
much -- they have a lot of different programs and pull in money from
government, foundations, and corporate and individual donors. That's pretty
much how these things work -- BRC seems to be pretty established and
certainly better off than a lot of similar organizations that operate on
much smaller budgets. At the same time, having all those corporate board
members and ties certainly has an influence on an organization, even one
that's doing good things for homeless people.

So its complicated on both sides, and it seems that positions hardened on
both sides, nothing good is going to come of this.

I couldn't agree with you more - I hate all the CBGB

YUCK!

Let it go... Change is a good thing.

I had to put my 2c in here about Tommy Lee....he may be dumber than a box of rocks, but I still think he's a babe!!!! ;-)

I'm not in NY so I can't see this CB's shit for myself--nor have I ever!--but I believe it should be preserved. Even if its 'not the same'--things change. But do they need to change to beige all the time???!!!

I'm sick of gentrification in my own city. My old tavern--the one that launched
Nirvana, Sound Garden, Alice In Chains--etc etc--is still 'there', but its not. It got sold and since its an historical site, the outside remains the same, but it now has a full bar and looks just like the singles bar 2 doors down from the inside. And I've never been in there since the old regime changed.

There is something to be said for preserving even shitholes, under the same management and booking.
They've got history.

Tommy Lee's easy on the eyes and I think he's also got his heart in the right place if he's making money to save CBs. I do think its a worthwhile venture and I agree with Seena on this one.

As much as I also believe that change can be a good thing and that we can all
move on to new ... and who knows... perhaps, more exciting situations (never
know what's around that corner - good or bad ) ... I will never forget the
first time I walked down to14th street from Irving Place and saw the spot where
the Palladium once stood, and now turned into a New York University dorm...

My heart sank. Deep down inside .... my soul was crying.... I wondered if
the residents of that dorm could still... occasionally hear echoes of what took
place within that space that was once known as the palladium....

Its actually fascinating how cities evolve... I think I had read at the
Bowery Ballroom's website that the space it occupies was once some kind of retail
discount clothing store... or something like taht... hey... maybe someday...
our grandkids will buy back the space that CB's occupied (I'm already speaking
in the past tense) and start up a new club with a new name... that will spark
a new revolution.... hmmmm...

Let it go... Change is a good thing.

Tipitina's, the heart of the New Orleans music community (much like CBs is/was to New York), established a foundation in 2002 to preserve the musical culture of New Orleans. They are now using the foundation to help New Orleans musicians get back on their feet.

Or as Gertrude Stein may have hummed into Willie the Shakes' ear, "But a
CBGB's by an other name..."

Fillmore closed. Fillmore East closed. Yellow Dog closed. Winterland closed
(and what a great DVD the Dead made of THAT! VERY recommended!). Love street
closed. Even the Armadildo World Headquarters and Mother Earth closed.

But the music continues. (I wonder what Patti songs the Dead and other-enders
have done???)

Max's Kansas City closed, too. Even Patti, at her concert at CBGB's on May
1, said something like, "If they close CBGB's, then there'll be another place
to play." (not a direct quote). And it's true. But that doesn't mean we
can't still fight for the places we love. xxo- Seena

I went to the DW concert last night and they were really good.

Before the show the PA played some Television songs and my friend and
I got to talking about Tom Verlaine, and I was wondering about his status
with respect to the Patti Smith Group. It sounds like he's playing with
them some concerts these days, and not at other concerts. Does anybody
know more? It seems like he really does a great job of filling in their
sound
when he plays with the group.

- Mitch

So, anyone want to "do" Ralph Nader? I mean, that man
deserves a hand, too. He's way more culpable for our
current situation than Dick Cheney is...

Apparently, 1980 just wasn't a rockin' year.

In the way of the music world, acts that have seen 25 years elapse
since the release of their first record become eligible to be
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

However, the Rock Hall nominating committee snubbed the newly
eligible class of 1980 entirely, seemingly unable to find a band
worthy of putting on the ballot sent out to voters this week.

That left room for perennial nominees such as Black Sabbath (now on
their eighth bid), Lynyd Skynyrd (seventh bid), the Sex Pistols and
the Stooges (five bids apiece).

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, which last year became the
first rap act nominated to the Rock Hall, has another chance this
year to become the first rap act inducted.

Other holdovers from previous years include the J. Geils Band,

Smith Group, Chic and Joe Tex.

First-time nominees to the eclectic ballot include Miles Davis,

Stevens, Blondie, the Paul Butterfield Band, the Dave Clark Five and
the Sir Douglas Quintet.

The 2006 induction ceremony will be held in New York, though no other
details have been released. Inductees will be announced before the
end of the year.

Davis, known for his jazz mastery, may seem an odd choice for the
Rock Hall. However, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame CEO Terry Stewart, who
also sits on the nominating committee, said that Davis influenced
many rockers musically and in terms of his attitude.

The trumpet player was born in Alton, Illinois, and raised in St.
Louis. From the 1940s until his 1991 death from pneumonia,
respiratory failure and a stroke at age 65, he pushed the limits of
jazz, experimenting with everything from bebop to jazz fusion and beyond.

Stevens, who is now known by the name Yusuf Islam, sold scads of his
gentle folk ballads in the 1960s and '70s, including "Moonshadow,"
"Peace Train" and "Wild World."

In 1977, the singer abandoned his musical career and became a Muslim.
Last fall, he was deported from the United States after his name
popped up on a federal no-fly list while he was on a plane bound from
London to Washington D.C.

New wave rockers Blondie, led by Debbie Harry, topped the charts in
the late '70s and early '80s with hits such as "Heart of Glass" and "Call Me."

The Paul Butterfield Band, led by harmonica-blowing singer Paul
Butterfield, earned a place in musical immortality when the blues
band backed

Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Butterfield died of a
heroin overdose in 1987.

Disco scenesters Chic scored their first massive hit in 1977 with
"Dance, Dance, Dance." Frontman Nile Rodgers later went on to produce
hits for artists including Madonna, Debbie Harry and

Bowie.

The Dave Clark Five was a wildly successful British Invasion band in
the 1960s with 24 hit records Stateside, including "Over and Over"
and "I Like It Like That." In the height of the band's fame, the Dave
Clark made a record 13 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show before
breaking up in the early 1970s.

The J. Geils Band came together in Boston in 1967 and scored hits
such as "Must of Got Lost" and "Give It to Me" in the '70s before
rising to the top of the charts in 1981 with the catchy
teen-obsession anthem "Centerfold." Other hits include "Freeze Frame"
and "Love Stinks."

Heartland singer Mellencamp, known for his numerous Top 10 singles
such as "Jack and Diane," "Hurst So Good" and "Pink Houses," released
his first album in 1976 and cofounded Farm Aid with
<http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/celeb/eo/en_music_eo/17386/16452654/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Willie%20Nelson%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw>Willie
Nelson.

The Sir Douglas Quintet was formed in San Antonio in the 1960s and
scored a 1965 hit single, "She's About a Mover." Frontman Doug Sahm
died in 1999 of heart failure.

The Patti Smith Group was signed to Arista by Clive Davis and
released its first album, Horses, in 1975. The group's no-frills
approach to rock paved the way for the punk movement that followed.

Tex was a soul singer, who scored his biggest hit with 1972's "I
Gotcha." He converted to Islam that same year and changed his name to
Joseph Hazziez . He died in 1982.

Nominees are picked by a 70-member committee of rock 'n' roll
historians, journalists and label execs, with ballots then mailed to
an international voting body of 700 music industry types for the
final decision. The five to seven nominees that receive the most
votes will be inducted into the Rock Hall next year.

Well I received an update from Pollstar saying Patti Smith is playing
November 21 and 22, in NY. With U2 at the Garden. Nothing is on
pattismith.net. Is this real or is it another mixup with Patti Smyth?(sp?)

My guess is it's just really early on Pollstar so tix haven't gone on
sale. That would be a cool show, but the Garden? Man, that's a long
way from seeing Patti at the 9:30 in DC.....

I did find this info searching venues and Madison Square Garden....

btw, I don't think Patti Smyth is doing much in the music dept. these
days aye? Isn't she raisin' rugrats with that tennis star?
