In her interview with DE ZEIT Patti alludes to the
corporate structure of today's record companies, which
ironically now allows Columbia to release the double
disc of HORSES LIVE since Sony and BMG have merged
perfectly in some corporate hallway...
Q: Is your voice heard on American radio?
PATTI SMITH: They will never play someone like me,
even if I sing a lullaby. Theres no chance. They
don't like my voice. Also the record companies throw
people away who show too much idealism. Two years
before I signed with Columbia, I was with a large
company (Arista) attached then to BMG. Afterwards it
merged with Sony and disappeared. Columbia is also an
appendage of the same company. Nowadays company
structures resemble the building of the tower of
Babel.
_________
And here is what Patti wrote about the 30th
Anniversary of HORSES from the Meltdown festival
programme:
"This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the
release of my first album Horses. In 1975, we sought
to declare our existence as well as acknowledge the
significance of our musical heritage. We are still
seeking to serve, communicate and inspire. The
Meltdown festival has offered me the opportunity to
accomplish these goals. To salute our predecessors,
from William Blake to Jimi Hendrix. To maintain
solidarity as a cultural voice and to interact, the
veteran with the fledgling. On June 25th we will
perform Horses live in its entirety for the first
time. It is our hope to infuse the innocence that was
there in its inception, under the guiding hand of John
Cale, with thirty years of experience."

>From Patti's draft page of her handwritten notes for
Land, dated April 1975 version IV, which more
graphically describes Johnnys anal ASSsault in the
hallway:
another boy (Mexican, it doesnt matter) was sliding
up (putting up) posters. 6-foot identical convent
advertisements. Thirty nuns up quick and slick. Jimmy
Cliff on the radio. the harder they come. the paste is
drying. the mexican has a hard-on. Johnny puts down
his glass of tea. he wants to run but the movie goes
on as planned. he rams his cock home. no one comes. No
one came. The corridor is empty. Johnny was wailing.
he puts down his glass of tea. he lights a cigarette.
the hallway goes on forever. He mounts his steed and
they fly thru the hallway. His crotch is burning. He
laughs hysterically. Everywhere horses and women are
closing in. everywhere Titos face is burning holes in
the crotches of the sisters and from the other end of
time a rythum is generating. a rythum, a rythum of
horses. Do you know how to pony? He imagines hes
being surrounded by horses. . .
