I'm sure I've posted this before, but then, Mitch has
been known to send duplicate posts which arrive a year
apart, so... ;)

From a 1997 Goldmine interview with Jay Dee Daugherty...

Q: You got tagged as Musical Consultant to
help Bob Irwin with the Arista reissues, so
that's a clear acknowledgement of your
contribution to the larger picture. What
did your role as Consultant entail?

JDD: Crawling around in the vaults looking
for tapes! [whispering] The master tapes for
_Horses_ have been lost! Which I was
extremely upset to discover! No one knows
where they are or whether they still exist.
You know how things go. We actually wound
up mastering that [reissue CD] from an
EQ'd master for LP mastering, a safety copy.
It still sounded better than what was put
out initially on CD. But the one thing I
wanted to get my hands on was those tapes!
I know this is heresy, but I would like
to remix it, just to make it sound a little
bit stronger. I never thought it was as good
  as it could have been.

And I know there were alternative takes,
because a friend gave me a cassette about
five years ago of alternate takes - like
"Land" that I remember us cutting! It was
so bizarre putting it on, and as I was
listening to it, "Oh, I remember this! I
remember this!" I would remember where John
[cale] kept interrupting us. You know, I
think if any of the stuff would have been of
interest, it would have been finding outtakes
  or oddiites from that period.

Q: There has always been this feeling that
there must not be a lot left in the vaults.

JDD: Well, there really wasn't much left.
I mean, everything that's on "Masters",
that's it; there were no extra tracks. There
  was "Chiklets" from the _Ethiopia_ sessions;
it was something we'd done live before a
few times, but it just wasn't deemed quite
as good. Also, that was back in the day
when you were limited to twenty minutes a
side, so.. And that's it! Unless the _Horses_
stuff shows up. And none of us remember
recording anything that didn't make it
onto the record. There was one jam session
with Allen Lanier and John Cale. All this
after-the-fact digging up of stuff, it's
weird, and it bothers me a little bit. You
made your choices then, so why not respect
them. Go with "first thought/best thought".
You left it off, why not really leave it off!
