marianne shows (NPC)

this is jackthecat your correspondent coming at ya. I had 4th row both nites
at Hunter College Kaye Playhouse...Marianne looks great, sang great, lower
register even than last year and with much more confidence in herself and
her band...she has a whole new band except maybe the drummer...no barry
reynolds on guitar but a great guitar player and no christopher on
bass....but a great stand up bass player who doubled on electric bass,
excellent musician...she reminded me most of a jazz singer like a billy
holiday or dinah washington...like she could go on like this forever as long
as she lives...she also got a sort of janis joplin look at times, like when
she would ruminate, space out or look a little vulnerable, she had her usual
sincere odd smile going also...she sat in a chair in the middle of the stage
between singing lines and listened to the band jamming out, which they did
much more than last summer, then she'd wait for the beat and get up and
resume singing..she was really digging the band.....I gave her a beautiful
bouquet of flowers both nites, tres cher, but she loves flowers and doesn't
rip them apart onstage like patti:) I wore my babel shirt both nights and
she recognized it/me the second nite since I gave her one last summer in
Amagansett so she is an honorary babel-list member.
These are the songs she did, if it says 2 it means both nites, if 1 it means
one.  Always opens with Broken English and Vagabond Ways...Working Class
Hero 2, Guilt 2, Brain Drain 2, Tower of Song 1 or 2, Falling from Grace 2,
File under Fun 2, Incarceration of a Flower Child 1, Wilder Shores of Love
2, Lucy Jordan 2, Love Life and Money 2. Strange Weather 2, Morning Come 2,
Sister Morphine 2, As Tears go By 2, Wyd Ya Do it? 2.  She also did a song
from A Child's Adventure that she's never done live...it may be one of the
above...she also ended Saturdays show with a song AFTER Whyd Ya Do It...but
I forget what it was...Anyone????  I forget any other songs....she did
around 14-16 each nite...To make a long story short, these were totally up
there shows....great energy and music, I'm still high....On Sunday she began
by saying she'd probably have to cancel because she shot her voice the night
before, and she said it after every song, "something tonite is better than
NOTHING, right???", but the energy and her exuberance that came out fromt
the crowd's response let her do the entire show, maybe leaving out 2 songs
from saturday and shortening a few songs musically and not doing vocal
gymnastics...
The audience was better and more with her on Sunday..on Saturday she kicked
ass....both shows ran about 1 1/2 hours...she did more with her voice longer
on Saturday before she shot it.  She drank hot tea and hot something else in
a coffee cup last nite, maybe brandy maybe not, but no question a very clean
marianne:)...something hot that cleared her throat and let her cough once or
twice...she went for the ciggies earlier last nite even tho her voice was
supposedly shot, she should do ads for a cigarette company (just a
joke)...she teased us that she was now going to be mean to us on saturday
because she lit up a cigarette which of course she smokes during the song,
and no one  else in the building is allowed to smoke.  She kept trying to
tell jokes that she's thought of...told 2: what is a musician without a
girlfriend...homeless and something about an armadillo or some type of
animal....must have been a brit joke...went over my head...she was barefoot
for the whole show on saturday and wore shiny black strapped flip
flops/flats on the second...rumor from one of her people is that she will be
back soon in NYC.
