Patti/Springsteen/REM

Regardless of how big a star Springsteen was back in
78, Patti's association with him and the success of
Because the Night opened up her music to a much wider
audience than those who followed the NYC scene in
those days. Unfortunately by the time she returned
with Dream of Life most of this new audience had
forgotten she existed.

Over the past few years her association with REM has
again opened her music to a new, younger audience. I'd
like to bet that many of the younger folk who attended
Patti's European show's last year, first heard her
singing on E-Bow the Letter.

Appearing with Stipe is certainly not going to harm
Patti's stature as an artist of great integrity. The
respect shown to her by the likes of Dylan and Stipe
emphasises her continued importance as an artist.
Whereas Patti will never sell records in the same
volume as REM, selling a few to a new younger audience
may well make the difference that ensures we continue
to hear more from her.
