For what its worth, I would agree that REM is past
the apex for me. I peaked in 87 shortly after moving to little rock.. it
was raining, listening to south central rain in the car on the way over.
went to an awesome preconcert party where they had good pot, asparagus, and nice
female companionship. Cut to the chase.... they played a ripping
cover of toys in the attic. people were slamdancing in the isles (when
slam dancing was novel..pre mosh pit). I heard they played "Pills" (NY
dolls) on an occasion back then. Monster was the last significant
recording for me. It would have been wise for them to break when Berry
signed off - although he said he diddnt want to be the one to break REM
up.
That is not to say that what Michael did for Patti
(and others?) is not admirable (two seperate issues). They have always
stood for the environment too, which is true beauty i must say.
like i say its just my opinion, iam no rock
critic.
