Regarding Springsteen, I do remember he was a big
deal (growing up in NYC mid-70s), and saw him in
'78 at Palladium AND MSG later in the same year.
Both Springsteen and Patti were getting pretty good
WNEW-FM coverage at the time, although Patti's was
somewhat diminished by her offending NEW's sensibilities
w/her "you can't say fuck in radio free america" during
a harry chapin hungerthon a year or so earlier. DJ
Vince Scelsa loved Patti's stuff, and recall him playing
BTN 4 times in a row one May afternoon when it first came out.
As a sidebar to Bruce, the first time I saw Patti was
at CBGB's 2nd avenue theatre (12.30.77)and remains to
this day the most transcendant (sic) magical performance
i have ever witnessed in person...It was Patti's birthday
show, the fire marshalls pulled the plugs and closed the
theatre down early due to overcrowding (leaving PSG to finish
set acappella), and a duet with a telecaster (i think)
toting Bruce Springsteen. Recall Patti
introduced him by saying she'd written a song with Bruce
Springsteen (crowd chuckles), that it would be released
the following year and would be a hit single (crowd roaring
laughter)...laughed so hard at the thought of "our" beloved
downtown Patti w/a hit single that didn't realize until
a minute into the then-unknown song, that the clean shaven
figure on stage was indeed Springsteen himself. The following
summer the song was all over new york (or, at least that's how
i remember it).
