If Patti's musical direction had changed to one
heavily influenced by REM then I might agree with you.
However, Patti's music remains her own and no way can
she be described as a 'sell out'.

Would you describe her association with Bruce
Springsteen that resulted in her only 'hit' record as
constituting a 'sell out'? I don't think so.

Being associated with critically acclaimed artists, no
matter how big and radio friendly, is no bad thing.
Like it or not, Patti needs to sell records and if
only a small percentage of REM fans get into her music
it could generate a significant number of sales.
If associating with cool new artists would result in
increased record sales then fine - unfortunately I
wouldn't count on that happening.

I don't know where Patti's post-Arista future lies but
I only hope that she gets the support to continue to
produce great music. To get that support she needs to
increase her audience base - so get the word out and
spread the music instead of dissing her choice of
musical associates.
