Patti-Horton Hears A Who

DISHTORY

41 years ago today (June 22, 1959), Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New
Orleans" began its fourth week at the top of charts, where it would stay for
a total of six weeks. Horton's only #1 record and million-seller, the
quasi-history-lesson-of-a-hit had Americans singing "In 1814 we took a
little trip/Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip/We took a
little bacon & we took a little beans/And we fought the bloody British in
the town of New Orleans." Horton scored smashes with two movie title songs
-- "Sink The Bismarck" and "North To Alaska" -- in 1960. The Tyler, Texas,
born Horton married Billie Jean Jones, Hank Williams' widow, before his
tragic death in a car crash on November 5, 1960. On July 4, 2000, Legacy
will re-release "The Spectacular Johnny Horton," the definitive collection
with special added bonus tracks.
