Any reason why you think this? REM are one of the most innovative and
challenging acts around at the moment. OK, so you may think they are
boring, but perhaps that says a lot about the current state of the music
scene.
REM have never made an album that sounds like the last. 'Up' was one of
the best albums of 1998 and opened the band up to a whole new audience.
The subsequent tour was one of their most successful ever. Their refusal
to pander to hype and record company constraints has been a major key to
their success over the last 20 years and is undoubtably the reason why
they continue to command such a large degree of respect from industry
people, critics and consumers alike after all this time. Most bands of
their age tend to resign themselves to peddling out the same old tired
formula over and over again simply because it sells records. REM don't
live up to that ideal. If that makes them boring, then so be it. I'd be
interested to know what you consider NOT to be boring.
REM and Patti Smith love and respect one another - Stipe got into rock
music through hearing 'Horses'. He helped Patti through some tough
times. Last year, they played several dates together whenever their
respective tours crossed paths. In my experience, a great number of REM
fans love Patti Smith (I for one), and vice versa. They both make
quality music for intelligent, passionate people.
So I'm biased, yeah. I also respect your opinion (you're a Patti fan, so
you can't be all bad ;-) ). I just cannot agree with you on this one at
all. Sorry.
