"Fear of Music" ought to be required listening for anyone seriously
interested in 20th Century Music of any genre.
I've often wondered if any "authority" has coined a term for the group of
rock greats in the late 70s/early 80s in the New York scene. I would include
in this "school" or "sound" Smith, Reed, Ramones, Bowie, Eno, Talking
Heads, and Iggy Pop. There are arguably quite a few others who could be
included. I've often been at a loss when reflecting on that collective and
distinctly associated "school" or movement even though each artist had/has a
signature ouvre. The terms punk, new wave, no wave, etc seem too inadequate
and rock n roll seems too broad.
If a term has not been coined, I wonder how music historians will refer to
such vital (to me, anyways), intelligent, raw and powerful music of that
era. Perhaps I'm putting the very short history (in relative terms) of rock
music under a microscope too soon for accurate classification.
I'm a scientist! I need nomenclature! OK, OK, a pigeonhole will do for the
sake of brevity, discussion, and my peace of mind.
cheers,
