from: Tony McCartan <TONY@itd.tv.bbc.co.uk> Hi Tim, Thanks again for the latest YLD. Yo La Tengo: The Monarch, London 4.29.95 Mostly stuff from the upcoming LP - the only recognisable one being "False Alarm". Three old ones:- "Sudden Organ" (Ira not so manic as usual - the old "Acetone" organ was "jet lagged" according to Ira - so he was using a substitute organ). "Drug Test" - new arrangement (to me anyway). "Story of Jazz" - with Georgia on guitar and Ira having a whale of time on drums Ira announced that they would be playing at "The Albany" the next night (4.30.95) as "Sleeping Pill" but unfortunately I couldn't make it. I don't think they've played as Sleeping Pill in England. Which brings to mind that I've never seen a review of "Sleeping Pill" in the Digest - anybody out there been to any shows? No sign of the single here yet. Cheers, Tony.

from: Lou J Geese <seogju@uclink2.berkeley.edu> dump zhivago ectoslavia the last few days have been a ylt bonanza for me. i found that is yo la tengo on used vinyl which i quickly snatched up the other day. then today i got a cd by dump. i think its new. cd is titled i can hear music and came out on brinkman records of the netherlands. the shop i went to had two formats of it. one just had the cd and the one i got had a bonus cd of james mcnew recording with barbara manning, chris knox, and some others whose names i don't recognize. the regular cd has 18 tracks and the bonus has 9. listened to it once through while doing some reading so i can't give that great a review but it sounds good. a lot of fuzzy guitar, catchy melodies, and a drum machine. i got this cd at *aquarius records* on i think 24th street, san francisco. another ylt related bit for my past couple days is i saw dr zhivago with tom courtenay. from what i can tell, this song must be about the film. the first line of the song, "julie christie the rumors are true" supports this idea with julie christie playing courtenay's love interest in the movie. but i'm not too sure how the rest of the song relates to it. i guess my hypothesis is quite weak actually but it does have those two connections. i got the following off the pavement list a little bit ago. was wondering if you knew of any more info on this band. any recorded material available? do they still exist? Ectoslavia was a band that has been documented in various 'zines. They were all undergrads at UVA and I think I remember them being described as "really noisy." I think most of these guys worked at the UVA radio station. The members were: Stephen Malkmus David Berman James McNew (Yo La Tengo, Dump) Bobby N. Gate Pratt (his address is listed on _Starlite Walker_; he has been on this list before calling himself Pavement's secret manager) Ken Ganfield Rob Chamberlain

from: Phil West <paigelet@mail.utexas.edu> Austin Chronicle Review Yo La Tengo, opening with a feedback sheen which twisted into a number off the upcoming Electr-O-Pura album, reversed their usual soft organs/loud guitars dichotomy throughout their mesmerizing 40 minutes. The organ, alternately pounced on by guitarist Ira Kaplan, bassist James McNew, or left to run on its own, was a device used to throw chaos and loops of screaming sound into songs like "False Alarm," a new song with hip-happy drums and slyly-sung vocals - although it was allowed to ring immaculately through "Sudden Organ." Georgia Hubley came out from behind her drums to strum guitar and sing another new song, the Velvet-gentle "Don't Say A Word," but most of the guitar in the set focused on Kaplan's clean, clear, and perfectly placed lines.

from: cott@skidmore.EDU (christopher ott) Picked up Stephen Merritt's 6ths album, "Wasps's Nests" (The exact title escapes me). Featured artists included Lou Barlow, Mary Timony, Dean Wareham and Georgia. If you've heard any of Merritt's stuff (Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes), then expect more of the same. The music and songs are all Merritt's, and the guest vocalists are just that. A decent one off.

from: Glenn Susser <glenns@panix.com> Hey Tim! Thanks for another great issue of the YLT Digest. Just outta curiosity, did Volume 2 mark 1 whole year of the Digest? If so, wow! Thought you might wanna update the discography with this. There's a Spanish compilation recently out - "Brush Your Ears" - that contains a slow spacey version of "Some Kinda Fatigue". It's on Radiation Records and I picked it up at Pier Platters in Hoboken - it can probably be mail ordered. It also includes great stuff by Sleepyhead, Antietam, Cell and mucho more. Also picked ed up the Tom Courtenay ep - amazing stuff! seeya. -- glenn susser glenns@panix.com CIS:73424.2630

from: "Jim O'Donnell" <jim@astroscu.unam.mx> Hi, After reading the latest YLT digest I wish I had been at SXSW. Would have loved to see Ira playing with Antietam, that sounds wild. Speaking of Antietam, I said I would write something about Rope-a-dope. I guess it's been out for a while now but if anyone on the list doesn't have it, I highly recommend it. A fine album. I have played it over and over again, with the volume cranked way up. I don't think I can get enough of Tara Key's guitar playing. The tracks (sorry I'm typing this at work and I can't remember many names) range from fairly short simple rock (Graveyard) through to longer tracks which move from quite soft melody lines to bursts of chaotic guitar noise. Oh yeah, Ira plays organ on one track too (on Hands Down, I think). I'd say that anyone who likes Tara Key's solo album, Bourbon County, will also like this, which is also on the Homestead label, and any Yo La Tengo fans who haven't already heard Antietam will find that this album is a fine introduction. A couple of questions; does anyone on the list know if Tara Key's second solo album is out yet? Also, the track 'Graveyard' on Rope-a-dope is credited to a name I don't recognise. Anyone know if it's a cover? This is totally unrelated to Yo La Tengo but Tom Verlaine was mentioned here a while back. I just wanted to point out that his album "Dreamtime" has been reissued on CD and it's a bloody good listen. Oh well, back to work Jim O'Donnell
