Alienation and Despair - Faves

A Bald Head?!?!

Volume 2 , Number 12 Yo La Digest Mar 29, 1996
My travelling companion and I once found a bottle in a state liquor store in Rapid City SD for $8. It was "Durango" brand, and alas, I've never seen it since. It wasn't actually labeled 100% Agave, but it sure tasted like it. ...Larry Hunter's Tequila Tips

from: Brian Tonsmeire Yo La Tengo began playing sporadic East Coast college dates last night Mar. 15. I had planned on making the drive from New York City to upstate NY to see yesterday's show at Binghamton University as soon as I heard the details of the concert. I also realized earlier this week that Dump was scheduled to play at Maxwells in Hoboken NJ the night before the Binghamton concert. I had never seen James' band before and wasn't quite sure whether to expect a solo or group effort. Since the show was taking place in Georgia and Ira's hometown I figured there was a pretty good chance they would be there so I wasn't overly surprised to walk by Ira upon entering the club. Concerts at Maxwells are held in a great little back room, so small that the band must walk through the audience to reach the stage. When James finally approached the stage, the first of three bands playing that evening, he was joined by Ira and Georgia. James and Ira each sat on chairs, both playing guitars. While Georgia sat behind a snare drum and cymbal. James began the show simply stating, "Hi, our band's called Dump." With that they began an eight song set featuring James' songs. The effect was mind blowing. With the help of his bandmates, James transformed his solo style songs into surprisingly intricate pop classics. The guitar interplay between James and Ira was hypnotic and was matched perfectly by Georgia's harmonizing background vocals. It was fascinating to see the three of them playing in this setting. I had only previously heard one of the songs that was played but I enjoyed all of them. The complete set list is as follows: Everything's Fine Clarity Beyond the Door Secret Blood Frankie Lymon Little Hat Superpowerless Made for it (Thanks to James for letting me grab the set list.) I went home that evening remembering that I was going to see them play again the following night. The hall they played at Binghampton was significantly larger than the room at Maxwells, but YLT always seem to create an intimate atmosphere. The concert relied less heavily on songs from Electropura than recent shows. Ira was his normal kinetic self bouncing from guitar to organ to drums through the course of the set. I've never left a YLT show dissapointed and tonight was no different. The crowd was mostly made up of students who seemed familiar with the songs. At one point Ira happily obliged a request playing a slowed down version of 'Upside Down,' featuring Georgia on organ. At other times he seemed a little annoyed at repeated calls for VU covers. One of the highlights was a performance of the excellent Dump song 'Slow Down' with James once again taking center stage. I have tried to reproduce the set list below, but can't vouch for its completeness since I reconstructed it at 4:30 Am when I got back to NYC. Anyway here goes: Double Dare Shaker Flying Lesson Decora Tom Courtenay Slow Down Upside Down Did I tell You Nowhere Near ? False Alarm Sudden Organ Blue Line Swinger Enc: Ant Music Dreaming ? (The song where Georgia plays bass) After witnessing the past two nights it appears that the band is evolving once again, incorporating more of James' music. This is sure to add another exciting dimension to Yo La Tengo. (P.S. I'm still trying to begin a live tape collection. Any help Digest readers can provide will be appreciated. from: Martijn <acacia29@worldaccess.nl> Hello. I know it has been 7 months ago, but because I recently subscribed I just wanted to tell you about the great YLT-concert in Holland at the Lowlands festival at August 27th 1995. Before the YLT-show, I had only heard them a few time on the radio, but I liked the songs I heard so I decided to go to the stage where they played. It wasn't that busy, I think because Green Day played on the main stage at the same time. The show started with a long keyboard-intro which made my heart beat a little faster. For some reason nobody seemed to be enthousiastic. They continued playing all great songs. Then Georgia came from behind the drumkit and sung a few songs, which was really nice. At the end of the show everybody seemed to be really enthousiastic. I decided to become a YLT-fan. Unfortunately, I don't know which songs they played, but I think it's very good if a band could make me enjoy a show when I can't sing along with the songs. Martijn.
