Ira is a believer. ...unknown rock crit
Wondering, I remember reading that Ira is/was a rock critic/writer. Does anyone know where he's been published? Might be fun to check that out. Elsewhere, The Trouser Press has favorable reviews of yo la tengo records up until around 1990. Has a newer edition been published? singing in the shower blending into time, tim tim@vestek.com p.s. circulation 56
from: Bo Orloff (boo@netcom.com) Tim- I've got an additional listing for the YLT discography: "Here Comes My Baby" / 5" CD EP / Bar/None 1990 [Promotional Only?] Tracks: 1. Here Comes My Baby (same as _Fakebook_ version) 2. The Story of Jazz 3. Barstool Blues 4. Let's Compromise 5. At The River's Edge 6. Ecstasy Blues 7. Speeding Motorcycle Tracks 2-6 were recorded live at the Ecstasy in Berlin, May 1989. Track 7 is the Daniel Johnston singing over the phone version from Nick Hill's Faucet show on WFMU (same as the SOL single). My copy says "For Promotion Only / Not For Sale" on the inside of the insert, but I have the recollection that this was sold in stores (maybe they just had a few for sale at Pier Platters). There are no catalog numbers anywhere on the insert or the disc. Best regards... -- Bo Orloff
from: Lise <LePageL/MF@hermes.bc.edu> Hi Tim, I enjoyed today's issue of the YLT digest, especially the review of the Tara Key record. I was just in my local record outlet on Saturday, and the bums told me they had never heard of her or her record. I think they're slipping, because it got a write-up in Spin last month, so it can't be all that obscure. [lise, don't go to tower, support independent record stores - try *in your ear*] ... ... Here Comes My Baby liner notes as above ... ... [Here Comes My Baby EP] might have been released in some other form but if so, I don't know details. In any event, this was my introduction to YLT, if you can believe it. I bought it after hearing an inspirational show at the Channel in Boston (abarn-like venue) with about 50 people in attendance, and the club showing all the signs of imminent collapse (no heat, strange unidentifiable beer product). Ira was pissed off and played like it. Georgia was beatific and sweet. I was hooked. That's it for me. I have no other cool YLT news to pass along. Have a nice week. -Lise
from: glenn susser <p01400@psilink.com> Ride the Tiger was reissued late '93 by City Slang, the same German label that issued the original cd. It's got cool liner notes written by Ira, great pix (including one of Georgia sitting outside Hoboken's Elks Club,) replications of the ads in the Village Voice advertising for musicians, a picture of a poster advertisement of the dB's with Yo La Tengo in small print at Folk City (does this place still exist??) for $3. Oh yeah, the music. It was my first time hearing Ride The Tiger and it was a real treat. As a matter of fact, I almost fainted when I saw it in Pier Platters, not even knowing it was reissued. (I've seen it in a few places in NYC, so it's not THAT difficult to find, but you can always mail order it from Pier Platters in Hoboken, NJ) I had only heard the Kinks cover, Big Sky previously (don't they pick the coolest covers??) It's worth it for Big Sky alone. The original incarnation of The Evil That Men Do is on it. My other favorites are The Cone of Silence and The Forest Green. This album more so than any others really show the Neil Young/Velvet Underground influence. The best part is the 4 bonus tracks! Their first single The River of Water / A House Is Not A Motel (May '85) along with Crispy Duck / Closing Time (recorded live on cassette in April 86 and previously unreleased) comprise this bigbig treat. The funniest review of the single is duplicated on the liner notes. Well, funny to me anyway. It's from the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch and it rips the record apart, starting with "Hoboken's hip do not hot make, as Yo La Tengo proves with this slightly moody yet unmoving 7" single." I say "funny" cuz for the life of me, I can't figure out how the hell the Columbus Dispatch came to even review this virtual unknown. I went to school in Columbus, and the Dispatch was about as redneck as you can get (but we're going back a few years.) Anyway, A House Is Not A Motel, one of Arthur Lee's (Love) greatest (didn't I say Yo La covers only the grooviest?) is easily worth the $20. glenn
from: will <wer@library.att.com> The animation that was shown behind YLT while on the Conan show was made by Georgia and her sister, Emily, in 1984. It is called the Tower (music composed and performed by don christenson, ex-raybeat) and is about a little character constantly getting tormented by a tower that changes shapes constantly. Animation is big in the Hubley family; Georgia still does some work on her mother's movies, and Emily makes films as well. The Conan people really liked the way the video worked and want to use it again. Emily's most recent movie, called "Enough", uses a track from Yo La Tengo called "Walking Away From You" (sans lyrics). Will
from: ben <BDIEHL@POMONA.CLAREMONT.EDU> I noticed that nobody has mentioned Dump, which is James McNew's side project. As far as I know, he's only put out one album, "Superpowerless," which is available from Brinkman Records (P.O. Box 6028, Hoboken, NJ, 07030). If you're very lucky, you might find it at a good record store. The album is a random collection of tracks recorded from 1991-1993, and features quiet songs, YLT-ish rockers, oddball covers, and originals. Ira and Georgia guest on a few tracks, notably the feedback- drenched "How Many Bells?" The new wave organ shows up in a cover of Sun Ra's "Outerspaceways, Inc." McNew distinguishes himself as a gifted songwriter and displays a talent at several instruments. There's also a cool interview with YLT in the latest issue of Option (#55, with Courtney Love on the cover). See you around, Ben
from: derick weiler <dxweiler@watarts.uwaterloo.ca> Yo La Tengo sometimes plays around NYC under the alias Sleeping Pill, using a lot of tape loops and percussion. Supposedly quite "experimental" and "avant-garde". I remember reading the same thing in a story in Ray Gun a number of months ago. Anyone else heard anything about this? from: jeff economy <economy@mcs.com> I'm surprised you didn't know about the gazette; when I mentioned it in my subscription request I assumed you were already familiar with it (and remember kiddies, when you assume...). Anyway, they have at least two issues out, which they sell for a buck at shows. If you ask *real* nice like, they may let you reprint it here. Speaking of the gazette, the last issue mentioned that RIDE THE TIGER and PRESIDENT YO LA TENGO/NEW WAVE HOT DOGS CDs are available from them for $15.00 each postpaid (and both contain bonus tracks). They're also selling tshirts for $13.00 ppd (designs may vary), James' solo CD SUPERPOWERLESS (under the name DUMP) for $15.00 ppd, Will Rigby's LP SIDEKICK PHENOMENA on their Egon label for $4.00 ppd, and back issues of the gazette for a buck (comes with YLT sticker). The new address for those still using the old street address (no longer in use; they were forced to move late last year when the building changed hands) is: POBox 6028, Hoboken NJ 07030. Also, some of you animation freaks out there may be familiar with the team of Faith and John Hubley, creators of (among other things) the academy award-winning short MOONBIRD and tv's Mr. Magoo! All for now, --Jeff
from: Terry Harrist <terry.harris@jhuapl.edu> Our heros played at Baltimore's 8x10 Club headlining the last stop on their tour of the southeast -- they were with Teenage Fanclub in some places, Juliana Hatfield in others. The show was remarkable, at least in part, for technical troubles that can be attributed to our local unskilled labor behind the sound board. Georgia complained about monitors for the first two songs and even stopped a song at one point. She played with eyes-rolled-up frustration for much of the rest of the night. Ira tried to get things fixed -- with a decent sense of humor and resignation, but with little success. --- says Ira: "We've always considered this Club kind of a prototype. You know, like the Edsel." --- says Georgia: "Yeah, except an Edsel is probably worth more." (much laughter) Still, Ira said, "This set is really gonna pick up, and you'll hardly remember that this part even happened." Except Ira was only half-right. The set did pick up, but they played much of the night, it seemed to me, without much of the house sound. And, for the first time in my eight or nine years of seeing YLT live, Ira broke a guitar string. Perhaps purposely, it was at the end of the set. After the show, Ira said that he realized how spoiled he had become. YLT was touring the southeast with a big-name, top-notch sound guy, but they didn't use him in Baltimore. Since it was the last night of the tour, and because they had a full travel day before reaching Baltimore, they decided that is was better to release him rather than pay him an extra two days for one show in our fine city. Otherwise it was a typically wonderful show. They opened with a Neil Young cover (the name of which escapes me) and played mostly songs from May I Sing With Me and Painful. However, and as is often the case, I liked the encore best: First Ira takes a request: --- responds Ira: "The Who version or the Arthur Lee and Love version?..." --- after giggles and awe from the audience, "...Oh, I'm up for the Who." (For a ten point bonus, name the cover song. e-mail me for confirmation.) A second song request was for "something by the Feelies". And Ira said they didn't know anything. But then he said, "I love the Feelies and everything, but I think they recorded this song after they heard us play it" and he led the band through a rusty-but-fun version of Neil Young's "Barstool Blues". In a second encore, Georgia came down and played guitar as Ira played drums and James sang his screechy-loud-and-fast number that he's done the last couple of times I've seen 'em. Somehwere in there too, they did a quiet Fakebook song (not Speeding Motorcycle) and a quiet Painful song. According to Ira, they're going to be home for a while and then they'll do a tour of the midwest. (No, I didn't get details.) He said they've done the East Coast thing a couple of times already since Painful came out, and that he didn't expect they'd do Balt-Wash real soon. Anyway, that's all I know, and more. I'll go back to lurking now. terry.harris@jhuapl.edu
