ah, readers: here we are in into the 3rd issue already. circulation has passed the half century mark and winter's back has been broken. i'd like to thanks everyone who wrote in to contribute to the bootography, and those who plan on actively extending this list. elsewhere, michael pemberton picked up the yo la tengo gazette at his local record store. it's my hope to write and get permission to reproduce portions of their publication here (and vice versa). finally, i was wondering if anyone knew the source/artist of the vid that played behind the band on the conan appearance? georgia, maybe? certainly not someone on o'brien's staff. as ever, tim tim@vestek.com p.s. greg howard, we're being watched.
from: glenns@panix.com Based on an interview I read with Ira and Georgia, I picked up Tara Key's new release, Bourbon County. The guest musicians on the album read like an indie who's who, and includes Tara's friends, Ira and Georgia. Tara and husband Tim Harris used to be with Babylon Dance Band, and are currently part of Antietam, which they helped form around '85 I think. I enjoyed Bourbon County so much that I scooped up all the Antietam albums I could find. My level of enthusiasm about my "new discovery" is similiar to when I first heard Yo La Tengo. Antietam is pure energy, with Tara @ the helm on guitar. She's gotta be one of the most innovative guitarists around. Georgia and Ira produced what I consider Antietam's best album, Burgoo. Ira also plays an outrageous organ on a couple of cuts. Similarly to Yo La, they're a different band in concert. Better! They'll be playing in the NE and midwest in the spring and summer, and I highly recommend them. glenn Thanks for the tape. Teenager in Love was great, not to mention Andalucia. Barbara Manning was a great surprise. [glenn is looking for people holding yo la tengo bootlegs]
from: teddie_james@csicqm.sps.mot.com >From A Motel 6 single I finally listened to my copy of the From A Motel 6 single. The two b-sides are not bad. But what about the unlisted fourth track? It's a cool, driving, melodic number with Georgia on vocals. I like it a lot better than any of the songs on Painful. Funny how a b-side can be better than the whole album. Actually, I found Painful to be rather boring. Any clues about this song? Also, what's the deal with putting an unlisted track at the end of an album? Why not list it? I guess it's the current fad. In the last few years, I've seen it with Nirvana, No Alternative, the new Bodeans album, and now with this single. It's kind of stupid and pointless to me. [esp. since i couldn't find it]
from: coi0555@dcsc.dla.mil What's the deal with reissuing "Ride The Tiger" on CD in the US? If it's not in the next year or so, do you know of any mail order sources to order the German Import CD? Patrick B. Leek [Pier Platter's in Hoboken is an excellent place to start (201)-795-4785]
from wer@library.att.com > from: moebius@netcom.com > > at the time one of Jon's big things was pointing out how one of the > members of the backup chorus on "Emulsified" dissented with the > others...every time they said "Alright!" one supposedly says "No!" To > this day he swears he's right about this, and maybe so, but i remain > somewhat unconvinced. > > moe Moe wrote in the last YLT Digest that he remains unconvinced that someone is singing "NO" in Emulsified (Fakebook) while everyone else is singing "All Right!". Sorry Moe, but your friend Jon is right. The Pussy Willows' Eleanor Blake was the dissenting voice on that track. Besides the Pussy Wilows, Peter Stampfel sings on that track. I recomend YLT fans to check out anything Stampfel and his Bottlecaps have done. Don't know what the Pussy Willows are up to, but I don't think they are still together. Will
from: economy@mcs.com (Jeff Economy) "Bad Politics" is a song by New Zealand band The Dead C, and was the momentous first release on the legendary Xpressway label. The original is currently available on the compilation CD MAKING LOSERS HAPPY (Drag City) which collects all the Xway 45s in one neat package. Highly recommended! -Jeff
From: LePageL/MF@hermes.bc.edu (LePageL) [lifted from indie list Volume 3, Number 15] Yo La Tengo:_From a Motel 6_ (Matador) For YLT fans who must have it all, this cd4 is plenty worthwhile. Along with the single from _Painful_, you get two new tunes and an unreleased demo version of "Motel 6." "Ashes on the Ground" is a cover, and I'm guessing from the writing credit to Fair/Jickling that Jad Fair had something to do with it. It's one of those slow pretty ballads that Ira and Georgia croon so well. [Ira gives credit to Ned Fair/Jad Fair/Mr. Daniel Johnston] The instrumental "Nutricia" is a slow building anthem with a spiraling melody that hooks painlessly but irrevocably. Finally, after 59 seconds (or so)of silence, the demo version of "Motel 6" kicks in, a dreamier, weirder version with more overtly strange guitar and a gentler vocal. Finally, if you buy this disk, you'll be able to puzzle for yourself whether that really is the band snowmobiling through the wilderness in the cover photo. --Lise LePage in Boston
from: EMARTZ@A1.PSUPEN.PSU.EDU (Eston Martz) Tim-- Please add me to the Yo La Tengo list, which I just saw posted on rec.music.info. My band opened for them here in State College, PA under a short weekend jaunt in support of _Fakebook_, and they were great musicians and (surprise!) great people, too. Great band. Well, thanks for your help and for running the list. Yours, Eston Martz
Tour Dates ========== The tour rages on but exactly where? Last official word was that they'll be in florida in early march and a few dates up the east coast on the way home.
