sunday night i dropped in on the jad fair show at the thirsty swede. i've never seen daniel johnston, but jad is a lot like i'd imagine daniel johnston to be like, only more so. jad was squeecky, nerdy, and pathetically in love. the band played tight road flick soundtrack music that suited jad well. the expression on the female drummer's face was a 6.5 on scale of porno loop to pentecostal exorcism, wierd. i particularly enjoyed the songs 'angel with brown eyes', 'postcard from austin' and 'bashful bob'. see jad when he comes to your town. tim tim@vestek.com

from: Marc Odo <desslok@u.washington.edu> Yo La at Yoyo I went to the night set of the Yoyo-a-Gogo in Olympia last night, and it was awesome. Let's see, Bloodthirsty Butchers, a Japanese punk band, opened, and they were mediocre. They were followed by the one and only Jad Fair, and he really kicked out the jams. Ira jammed with him for his set. It was great. Kicking Giant followed, and I hate Kicking Giant. I think they're really, really bad. I didn't enjoy it at all. In fact, I fell asleep. Then Georgia and Ira took the stage. Without James, they played a simple accoustical set. It was sweet. Just Ira on guitar and the two of them singing- no bass, no drums. There were a few technical problems at the begining, but other than that, it was great. Let's see, I'm trying to remember what songs they did off the top of my head.....They opened with Hank William's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and also did "Satellite", "Upside-Down", "The Cone of Silence", "Big Day Coming", a Great Plains song...damn, that's all that I can remember now (I didn't get home until 3:30 that morning). I taped the show, and was pleasantly surprised with the results. That's the first time I've done something like that, and it turned out all right. So if anyone wants a copy of this show, give me holler, and we can work something out. The show, by the way, was only about 40 minutes long. Codeine ended the night, and they blew me away. I've seen these guys before, and whenever I hear them I get chills up and down my spine. It's great. I taped them, too, but I don't think it turned out as well. So there you have it. I'd like to thank you, Tim, for all your helpful advice. bye -Marc desslok@u.washington.edu
The following excepts are from Renee Crist's article entitle "Holidays and Strings" published in The San Francisco Bay Guardian, July 20, 1994. Holidays and Strings Yo La Tengo's Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan take a working vacation in San Francisco. - according to Kaplan this major label jump has made no perceptible difference in sales or audience reception. "each record does slightly better than the one before," - "record label support is at best a misnomer, it's all advanced against the royalties." he notes that they have taken advantage of label support for larger shows, such as their opening dates for the breeders, but that cushy accommodations are still an exception for ther band. - the show H & K are doing in SF is an offshoot of the couple's non-tour througgh the northwest. K sheepishly admit's they're offsetting travel expenses while on vacation. He hopes that the show will be billed as himself and H rather than as yo la tengo, a change in pratice reflecting McNew's true membership in the band. "Up until this very moment," K says,"we always figured if it was Georgia and me it was yo la tengo." - the band has been writing songs, but K is characteristically reluctant to say when a new album might be out. He's also stopped explaining which Spanish speaking baseball player used to yell "yo la tengo!" in the outfield. "it appealed to us taking it out of context before we had to keep putting it back into context," he complains. ira kaplan and geogia hubley perform a free show with the softies and patrick winningham, sun/24 at 5:30 p.m., bottom of the hill, 1233 17th street, sf (415)-625-4455
From: Greg Schmitz <gschmitz@luna.cas.usf.edu> Ringo This is a new service for music fans that reccomends artists based upon your inputted tastes. It is a new service that *definitely* be good for some Yo La Tengo fans to help mold and make it *cool* ***see below for more info*** rec.music.info (moderated) #3945 (0 + 28 more) From: shard@media.mit.edu (Upendra Shardanand) Subject: INFO: A Music Recommendation Service Introducing.. RINGO, a personal music recommendation service, being created at the MIT Media Lab. You tell Ringo what kinds of music groups you like. Then, you can query Ringo and ask for recommendations for artists you should check out, or should avoid. Or you can find out how mainstream your tastes are. Or retrieve other information, like reviews and top 20 charts. HOW RINGO WORKS: How does it work? Well, how do you do it ordinarily? You listen to songs that some D.J. plays, or you hear about stuff from your friends who have tastes similar to your own. That's how Ringo does it. People all over the internet tell Ringo about their listening tastes. It then finds people who are similar in their tastes to you. If they really like some artists that you haven't heard yet, Ringo will recommend them to you. HOW TO USE RINGO: Send an e-mail to ringo@media.mit.edu, with only the word 'join' in the body. It will then send you a list of 125 artists. You rate the artists that you are familiar with. Send it back. You will then receive a 'help' file describing how to use all the features of Ringo. The more users that use Ringo, the better Ringo's predictions. As time goes on and more people use it, you will find that the predictions become more accurate. So tell a friend. Thanks, Upendra
