After the initial few boots, it gets a little farther from said points of reference, some referenceless points, and some more traditional American points of reference, none of which I've ever associated with the Beach Boys before. As well we get into some songs a little more worked. Still strange as hell, but a little less mishwashy more Beach Boysey (not idaho). At times it sounds like they're really stretching at the seams, and hints at very bad trips as well. It's a real shock to the system if you've just heard the impossible to avoid, stock in trade Beach Boys songs, if you've heard more then that, you could probably take a more rational and contextual approach. As for me, I'm just a little rocked on it, and suffering from a bit of shock. I'm definitely going to have to give it another listen.
All in all, *I'd* call this the The Darker Side of the Beach Boys and worth a looksee.
From Spin's "35 years of Rock N Roll issue - 35 Seconds That Say it All"
Q: When you went into seclusion, where did you go?
Brian Wilson: To my room.
Q: Why?
BW: Because I'd run out of ideas. I had some personal problems that zapped
me and took me three, four years to recover from.
Q: What did you do in your room all those years?
BW: Beat off.
