It was a derogatory (sp?) term that was used in regards to the Germans as far
back as WWI, possibly even earlier. In fact, if memory serves, it's used in
Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" which was written around 1905ish.

I think the word Kraut goes way back to the 30's and Tenessee Williams used
that word in his play 'Glass Menagerie'.
