My theory is that firstly, it was a hit and one that could get airplay in a
climate that saw "Wild Thing" banned for being naughty.  Secondly, it was a
Phil Spector and just as Germans love David Hasselhoff, the UK loved Phil
Spector as the US did.  "Oo-Chang-A-Lang" by the Blue Orchids is great
faux-Spector (UK), as is "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" by the Walker
Brothers(US).  Why that particular song?  I don't know.  Why did "Some
Other Guy" become so very covered in the UK and slip away almost unnoticed
in its homeland (outside of the fact that Richard Barrett sounds a bit like
Ray Charles on the record and we had Ray Charles already!).

Here is another related question; was "Song of the South" a box office hit
on re-release there?
