the dave marsh bio, "before i get old," is still the industry standard. for me, anyway. lots of great detail on the early years. also necessary is richard barnes' maximum r&b, which offers a unique perspective on that as barnes went to art school w/ townshend. the 1998 moon bio "dear boy" (published in the US as "moon") is also a good one.
