Re: [bomp] How Can You Mend A Broken Capstan?

Yes and no Ron.

You're right that "factory authorized" Tascam/TEAC service is hard to come
by. I looked into opening a service center here in Austin and I've never
encountered a company any more difficult to work with. The nearest
"authorized" center is down in San Antonio and they don't know much about
reel-to-reel. They can order parts if the parts still exist.

But there are plenty of independent guys who can still fix a tape deck. And
plenty of NOS/Refurb parts, including heads, seem to be lurking around.

I hope to keep my 8-track and 16-track machines alive indefinitely. I also
have three or four semi-functional 4 track machines in my Empire of Broken
Shit...not sure what I'll ever do with 'em. Parts?

Take it for a ride, and when you get up to full speed, toss it out the
window.

You could spend money to fix the transport, only to find the heads are
shot.

At one point I tossed three reel to reel decks, and didn't feel bad at
all. There probably is no support for these old machines. Teac was a
consumer brand of Tascam, and there is no support for newer Tascam gear.
