did you actually have a reel wound up when you were pressing play? after i threw out what looked like a pretty mint VOA reel to reel that i picked up on the street, i found out that there was some sort of mechanism that wouldn't allow the 'play' function without a reel actually spooled through. i had just tested out the buttons without a spool on there. fast forward and rewind seemed to operate fine. play didn't. hence me tossing out what was probably a pretty cool machine. oops.  might be worth a test.
