[bomp] Re: bomp-digest V2008 #2181

There was a question here awhile back about Savage Resurrection playing at a
reunion.
They have now reformed and just played a date in San Fransico with Blue
Cheer.
Also they have made another run of LP their re-issued on cd.
Lastly they have a myspace page bands page and three of the member have
their own page.

As a promoter, I like Myspace. With Myspace I know where to find the sounds,
where to find the photos, where to find the reviews and other information.
When I go to a band website I all too often have to hunt around to find what I
want. That's down to bad design of course. But with Myspace it's quick and
easy for me every time.

from the standpoint of a distributor, let me chime in here (i did see bob's
response)

simply said, there are still a lot of old school folks who still want to
physically have something---i wouldn't focus on the 8 X 10 glossies though----a
one sheet, a few selected press clippings or a page of composite quotes from
press----an overview of your marketing/touring plans (depending upon the
recipient)---don't overwhelm anyone with a pile of stuff but 5 or 6 pages in a
folder works nicely

also--in my eyes, do NOT suggest someone go to your myspace or whatever page
to sample the music---send something even if it is only three tracks on a
burned CD with a nice homemade cover sleeve----give them something physical

also---this may sound dumb but you have no idea how many people get it
wrong----send in a nice clean well packaged envelope---do not reuse one with old
addresses crossed out---make the recipient feel that you are spending specific
time and energy to make a presentation to them----you cover letter should
ALWAYS be personalized to an individual----generic does no pique interest as
much as specific

just my thoughts----

Hi
I know some folks on this list are or have been in bands. So here's
the question: how do you put together a press kit. Have an outside
firm handle it, do it yourself and hang it off the band's web site? We
are releasing material and booking agents have started to ask for our
press kit. This has gotten out of hand

So why not ask the people asking, if they'd like a link to the
printable electronic version? If they ask for a physical copy, then
you can shell out the cash to print it, burn it, new-envelope it and
mail it.
Tell them it's a lot faster than waiting for snail mail, it
doesn't get lost or damaged in the mail, and (maybe) it reduces your
costs :D

Yeah, that sucks. If they are that type of wired-in,
they'll've done a myspace search on you already.

I'd say a webpage with a large image, which should be a little
less than an 8.5x11 standard sized sheet of paper... which is
equivalent to your glossy 8x10 photograph with contact information
overlayed on it. Make sure this photo has enough contrast, that if
they print it in black and white, your name and contact information is
clearly legible, and your picture doesn't look like crap.
I'd include a name, a phone, an email and a url as minimium
contact information. The url can be directly back to the website the
picture is on, because somebody (gf?, secretary?) may print the
picture, then pass it on to a decision-maker.

Then links to the other stuff:
press clippings/quotes (and links if those reviews are online)
marketing/touring plans/tour dates/availability
rates
your myspace page, for music downloads and the like.

Make sure each web-page is print-ready (will fit on a printed
sheet), loads fast, and doesn't require any plugins (flash, shockwave,
realaudio, pdf viewers, etc). And if it is text, that it doesn't have
tons of funky colors (or prints well in black and white even if it
uses color), weird fonts (which may not be on their machine), etc.

If you want that other stuff, you can have it - but have it
somewhere other than in your press-kit, or in addition to it. ie: a
pdf of all the press-kit pages might be nice, so someone could just
print the whole press-kit without going to each page and hitting print
- - but some people won't be able to access the pdf - so don't shut them
out.

You should read their excellent bio: Sweat. Proably one of the best Rock
books out there for it's journalism and just letting the people who were there
tell the story. And it makes you appreciate the Fleshtones even more as a band
that continues to fight the odds and make great music. They are finally
starting to get the recognition they so richly deserve. The best thing we can do
as fans of the band is to preach the Gospel of Zaremba and Co.!

i know i'm preaching to the choir here posting this to the bomplist, but
I'll say it anyway: the Fleshtones are the greatest rock n roll band
ever.
The Ugly Beats were lucky enough to get to play 3 shows with them this
weekend here in Texas. It's amazing how these guys just completely
smash the barrier between band and audience, and it's really fun to see
the astonished looks on the faces of the people in the crowd seeing them
for the first time. They're also some of the nicest people you'll ever
meet.

Fleshtones rule.
