Yes, the long awaited Stems U.S. debut gig at Maxwells on Monday showed they are a vital band even if they all have other things they keep busy with nowadays. I heard a few songs off their new album on Joe Belocks show and dug em but live they are great songs. The opener and Surround Me (that one written by drummer extraordinaire Dave Shaw) especially kill worthy.
Julian Matthews bass and backing vocals were solid, Dom Mariani (better known around these parts for the power popping DM3 and Someloves) proved to be a particularly kickass guitarist and singer while Richard Lane was an all-around threat on guitar, organ, vocals and harmonica [his song The Otherside being the nights high point].
We heard a nice spattering of Stems gems: At First Sight, Sad Girl, Move Me, Mr. Misery, Tears Me in Two, and er, which one drifted into Thems I Can Only Give You Everything? They also pulled out a rockin revival of the Easybeats Sorry that doesnt seem to be on any of their recordings. Guys: record those two covers right away as your 45rpm trib to your favorite 60s band! My bud Christina from the Anabolics is threatening to pepper their own set with a Stems song soon!
The night wouldnt be complete without word of the openers. I missed the groovy Insomniacs while I munched a (healthy) Maxwells burger but made time to see the Chevelles (a band Shaw was once in) and Gigantic. Both good, too! The Insomniacs lent out equipment that night to help make it happen.
I saw Ms. Cheryl (who I dont recall her being into the band back in the day) early in the evening and advised her to stick around for something truly special. I dont think she, or anyone, else left disappointed. And while I humbly got the principals in touch with each other, lets not forget Mr. Jeff Shore who got us all into the Stems. Take a bow, sir.
I think they are sharing a stage with the Sonics when they touch down in England later.
