Joe is too modest to mention this, so I'll mention it for him: The Ugly Beats had the biggest crowd of the night at the Get Hip showcase, I'm surprised the Fire Marshall didn't show up. And they pulled off a pretty serious coup, the real original singer from Zakary Thaks joined 'em onstage for "Bad Girl"...The Cynics were great too.
Not surprisingly we saw a lot of the same bands, but I'll add something about Magic Christian. Clem Burke is drumming for them nowadays. Holy crap, my favorite living drummer. Muck, PAUL COLLINS, Downbeat 5, Mullens, Mondo Topless...all I can do is agree w/Joe, they all delivered the goods.
I've already raved about The Stems.
My only real disappointment was Carbon/Silicon. Mick Jones is still a great guitarist, but the new tunes are dull and the show was a bit of a snoozer. Not worth fighting the crowd.
The Okmoniks did not play the festival, but they were in town and did a great in-store at Cheapo disks.
After my own set I was pretty exhausted but I caught VonBondies (quite entertaining) and Naked Raygun (I was too tired to pay attention but they sounded good)...and I'm still trying to sleep the whole thing off.

whew, my head hurts, my throat hurts, my liver hurts, my feet hurt! what a
great time this weekend. i didn't get to see much this year but what i did
see was really great. highlights:
paul collins! i got to see him 3 times and he was amazing each time. his
wednesday afternoon set at beerland might just be the greatest rock n roll
set i've ever seen by any band. absolute powerpop rock n roll heaven.
the stems - great, great band, and some of the nicest guys you could ever
hope to meet. very powerful live.
muck & the mires -- they tore the roof off Sonny's Vintage store on Friday.
these guys pace their sets as good as any band i've seen -- barely time to
catch your breath between songs. we need to figure out a way to get them to
austin more than once a year.
later friday i hit a tri-fecta of guitar players that most people would
dream about. in the space of 2 hours i saw X w/ billy zoom, downbeat five
w/ JJ Rassler, and magic christian w/ cyril jordan. downbeat five were the
best i've ever seen them.
the mullens - best of the bands on the get hip showcase imo (and they were
all great). original drummer rod baird is back in the band and they're now
a 2 guitar band. their new rec will be out in a month and it's a monster.
Mondo Topless was also really great Saturday night.
i'm interested to hear others chime in w/ their reviews...
