I see myself as an informed layman. Not as hep as Billy Miller, not as stoopid as the baseball caps who request The Cars AND Led Zeppelin. Nothing I play will cause hearing damage (I watch the meter, all 45s are masted differently).
Come see me Friday. Slow dance during my first hour. At midnight I will alternate soul hits with soul floor pounders that only other informed laypeople will know. Everything will have a 4/4 beat and a good melody. You'll be able to hold a conversation, which I know will be witty and sparkling 'cause we're in a bar. It's free to get in, leave if you don't dig it.

What a totally FCCing specious argument this is.
I get such a kick out of people who spin records in a bar and think they're
putting on some sort of legendary performance.
(I'm not talking about anyone here. Or maybe I am. But probably not.)
"You should play popular songs!" "You should play only obscure songs!"
Jesus Friggin' Alou. Okay, let me dust off something from my "Duh! File" for ya:
You're being paid to keep people in the room and keep 'em drinking. How do
you do this? You bring a whole gamut of records (or whatever you use) in the
style that they hired you to play, and then you start playing those records and
-- here comes the huge revelation -- you SEE WHAT WORKS, that night, in that
room, with those people. And whatever works, you keep doing it.
Sheesh.
P.S. ...and Linda made another lovely point: ain't nothin' wrong with a slow
dance or two, or five.
