Re:1 mention of Charlie Farren in new book on Boston
Music
I could not agree more! I'm sure many of you have had
more exposure to the scene than I, but I'm class of
'81 and spent 3-4 nights a week in the clubs (mostly
the channel, bunrattys and the paradise). I'm
comfortable in saying that jon and charlie are 2 of
the greatest talents to come out of ANY town and that
all of us are not just proud to be of that same town
and scene but downright appalled to see their
relevance slighted. I spent about a year at'BCN and as
much as I still love the station; the behavior,
attitude and self-"importance" I found there at that
young age turned me away from a career in radio almost
entirely. I must exclude however, steve strick and
albert o; at least on the little I had to go on, very
good people, . the accuracy and importance of any
given piece of written material will be supported or
undermined by those who remember...
Mr. V's response:
mr crocetti - the omissions in the Brett Milano book
are coincidental when you read what I posted on here a
few weeks ago... that we need to keep pressure on
Carmelita (WAAF), Shred (WBCN), Dave (WFNX) and other
local music shows to keep playing Charlie Farren, Jon
Butcher and our other favorite acts. Love me or hate
me there's no denying I've been objective and fair to
every band I write about - taking my own personal
grudges (if any exist) out of the equation and fairly
evaluating the importance of the music - and remember,
it's still merely one opinion. But it is far more
presidential than George W. Bush could ever hope to be
(granted, Bush is a terrible example, but you get the
picture)
Brett Milano, by ignoring important events and facts,
truly is trying to re-shape Boston history.
I don't have personal animosity against Brett, though
his supporters are pissing, moaning and complaining
that I do. My position is that Brett can dish it out
but he can't take criticism. He savages records he
doesn't like because he doesn't like them, not on
their merit.
Charlie Farren's body of work is most impressive, as
is Butcher's move to Barefoot Servants and his
soundtrack work (then add all of Jon's recorded
efforts before those two examples). It is frightening
that musicians can put so much time into their craft
and get slapped in the face because someone who came
onto the scene after-the-fact wants to selectively
discriminate - picking and choosing and then ignoring.
By not writing about collectible bands like The Fifth
Estate or a lengthy piece on The Barbarians Mr. Milano
loses sales. Think of how many Farren/Butcher/Fools
fans would purchase the book if there was some
inclusion? It is ludicrous to ostracize a community
that built the scene he claims he is documenting and
by limiting it to The Pixies (a great band that I
really enjoy) and Burma (a band I helped out in the
beginning but who just don't entertain me) and The
Lyres (who were EXCELLENT at the Cantab last night,
the few songs I caught. Mono Man has control of the
stage, has a really solid sound that DMZ didn't have
onstage (but did have on their great When I Get Off
single), he has really matured where Burma keep
pounding out the same old same old hype. I guess
Burma NEEDS Brett Milano to write propaganda while
Charlie and Jon have enough of a base that their work
will be remembered long after Brett hits the bargain
bins, probably in November. Heck, the dollar book
fans got to have SOMETHING to buy at Christmastime,
y'know
