Very true.  The quality of his recordings had been
going up even before the comeback  special, e.g. "Big
Boss Man" and "US Male" - those were recorded in  '67
but released in '68. Elvis must have sensed the poor
quality of most  of his mid sixties work and gotten a
clue even before the TV  special....




Also, and importantly, after all those years of making rushed trips to the  
recording studios between his hectic movie shooting schedule, to quickly  apply 
vocals to hastily-recorded backing tracks of lame songs written for the  
films, those early 1969 sessions (by which time his movie career was just  about 
winding down) were the first time in years Elvis had ample time to really  work 
with his musicians and producers on finding the right songs, and the right  
approach/arrangements for the songs, and put proper thought and care into the  
records he was releasing.
