Sure, most PC sound cards have a 1/8" stereo
LINE IN input and you can run a preamp directly
into it with an adapter cable. The only problem
is the analog-to-digital circuitry on generic
PC sound cards typically blows, plus on-motherboard
and PCI sound cards tend to pick up noise from
inside the case. Offboard USB/firewire devices
generally have higher quality components and don't
have the stray noise problems.
