RE: [bomp] velvet underground acetate
I think Bob's right that a full CEDAR restoration of the acetate would give
the ultimate sound quality available. However, once the transfer is made then
it's fair game for bootleggers so it would be become a battle of packaging
between rival companies. There is a great book by Clinton Heylin - Rise and
fall of the bootleg industry that gives the full history of these shenanigans.
You'd be looking at a situation similar to The Beatles Get Back sessions.
Does make sense that there would be at least 5 copies knocking around - as
each band member would have got one - and that each member still has their
copy. But where are the master tapes ? Surely they must still exist and
hopefully someone has been sent to dig them out. If the original masters turn
up then the acetate as a commercial entity is useless. Does make it baffling
why no-one has released it before though - COME ON UNIVERSAL - get it
together.
Killer story though - I bid just to be "part of rock history"
