<<Is it my imagination or has the hip Beefheart attitude moved from
"Trout Mask Replica is the greatest album ever," to "Trout Mask Replica is
good, but his best album was Lick My Decals Off, Baby?">>
i dunno...seems like the trout-mask-centric school of beefheart fanboyism was
always more the purview of rolling stone critics than the hipster crowd...i
always liked "decals" better, because there's more structure to the songs
(comparatively, anyway). also, brevity helps. i like beefheart, but 2 LPs of
skronk is a bit much for me...the only thing on "trout mask" that i like as
much as "doctor dark" or "i love you, you big dummy" is "the dust blows forward
& the dust blows back." i wouldn't go (quite) so far as to say "trout mask" is
beefheart's "the wall," but it's definitely overrated, especially over there in greilmarcusland.
