Seton Hall Radio Director Admits Embezzlement
NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A former director of Seton Hall
University's radio station admitted embezzling more than $550,000 over
a 13-year period, and faces five years in prison.
Michael Collazo, 58, of Hampton, pleaded guilty Wednesday to theft
before Superior Court Judge Harold Fullilove.
"Mr. Collazo abused his power as director, and let his greed get the
best of him,'' said First Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn
Murray. "His deplorable conduct cost him his reputable job and a
significant amount of time behind bars.''
Assistant Prosecutor Gail Gallagher said Collazo's scheme involved
embezzling more than $236,000 in underwriting money, and the
unauthorized leasing of WSOU's two radio sub-frequencies.
Collazo deposited the money into two of his business accounts and used
it to pay for personal expenses. The scheme ran from 1991 until 2004,
when Collazo was fired.
In 1991, Collazo entered into a lease agreement with Radio Verite, a
radio station that broadcasts to the Haitian community. It allowed
Radio Verite to utilize one of WSOU's two sub-frequencies.
In 1999, Collazo leased the second sub-frequency to EIES of NJ, an
organization that provides radio broadcasts for the blind. The lease
payments from the two agreements totaled nearly $350,000, but Seton
Hall never received any of it.
Seton Hall said its insurance policy had repaid the school for the
money lost through Collazo's scams.
Collazo is due to be sentenced Aug. 18.
